Hardware How well do 64GB cards work?

32 is really starting to limit me, upgrading to 64GB would really help, especially since I started backing up my carts to CIA.

Nintendo officially states that the 3DS only can go up to 32GB, but I have had a lot of people tell me that 64GB work fine. I found this a little odd since cards over 32GB are a different standard than cards that are 4-32GB, and when my friend tried it their 3DS could not recognize the card. (Yes, it was reformatted properly to FAT32).

Which is why I am asking here. Do they work, or no? Or is it hit-and-miss? And if they work, could they cause problems later on? The thing I am most worried about is it working for a while, bit then deleting or corrupting data later on.

64GB cards should work great. I'm personally using a 128gb micro sd card and I haven't had a single issue with it (this is going on a year now, including being on menuhax and now A9LH). What is important though is you need to format your sdxc (or sdhc) cards to be FAT32, else they won't work with Nintendo's products.

I'm personally just about out of room at 128GB and am about to make the step up to the 200GB micro sd card (biggest size currently available), knowing that 128gb works, I'm not concerned with the thought that maybe 200gb won't work, it should, I see no reason why it wouldn't.

i heard that even at the right format, 128 gb carts only work to about 100gb or so?
64 ones work though. just use decrypt9 to format one (load decrypt9, eject your current cart, put in the new one and format (no emunand).

I have a 128gb card and its nearly completely full, so whoever said that thing about limiting you to 100gb is wrong, or maybe they had a defective card.

FWIW, DevMenu has been reported not to work if you have more than 100GB free space on the SD... As long as free space is under that it will work fine.

I don't even use DevMenu (have no need to) I've always used FBI for handling .cias which works fine with well over 100GB of data, so I've never checked to verify if DevMenu not working is true on a 128gb sd card or not. But I can assure you that all other homebrew apps and programs, and every game I've tried have worked without issue.

I've used a 128 gb card with no issues in my Zelda LttW o3DS XL. I also give my clients (I mod systems and sell them locally) with 64 gb cards. This work well, but I've taken to using the emunand9 thing to format my cards for other systems.

No, the problem is menuhax. It cant load tha card fast enough. SysNAND ends up loading before it can load the theme data. Works fine with a9lh.
Good to know. Would a faster SD/micro help(in the future), or is the read speed of the slot the limiting factor?

I have a9lh, so it doesn't directly impact me, but I would like to know if I were to give advice elsewhere. Knowledge is power, or some such thing.

Its the size of the card. Formatting something that large to FAT32 makes it take longer to read. This is why those cards use exFAT by default, but the 3ds cant read exFAT.

Hmm, this is the one I just ordered, anyone ever used it?

Kinda was debating if I should get 64 or 128, but was worried 128 would be pushing my luck.
I use a 200GB in my a9lh n3ds. You will be fine.

I having been using an 64gig sandisk ultra and it died on me two days ago ... it was working for about a year and maybe stopped working since I plug out my stuff with out going to safely remove drive or something ...

I think I am going to buy this one, https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Class-Adapter-MB-MP64DA-AM/dp/B00IVPU7AO. Would be thankful for anyone who used it or a similar product.

I've been rolling with 64 GB Sdcard/MicroSDCards for awhile now and they work perfectly on the my 3DS'
