I had my friend hack my PSP, as I'm not familiar with it.

According the the system menu, the firmware is 5.50 GEN-D3.

Anyway, I know I put the homebrew in the ms0:\PSP\GAME folder. However, I'm having trouble using the homebrew. More specifically, I'm trying to get a GBA emulator working. I've tried VBA and GPSP. The menu can recongnize it, but once I press it, it goes to the PSP logo, and then says it can't be started.

I haven't gotten a GBA to work since 5.50 GENA or 5.00M33-6.

That might be ur issue, try a SNES emulator, or one that has been updated after 3.40 OE, which usually do work. The 1.5 kernel isn't in 5.50Gen D3 and causes some apps/homebrew not to work.
