How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

Thanks Stephaniie!

One more question. You stated one of the requirements to have is a SD Card (no SDHC), does it have to be no SDHC because I've looked on ebay and most of The SD cards I find are micro or SDHC. Wouldn't I need an SDHC card to hold and transfer all my VC games later on?

When you search for an SD card, look for one 2gb and under. I went on ebay and put the search phrase " 2gb sd card" ( without quotations), and 1755 results came up.

Does the Loader GX channel require me to have an SD card in my wii to operate cause I tried opening up the Loader GX channel with no SD or external harddrive plugged and it took me back to the menu screen.

A friend of mine, followed this guide, and now he cannot access any channel, except Hombrew and Mii... The Wii freezes when trying to access other channels. Any help?
No idea.

The guide consists of 6 steps.

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Install Custom IOS using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-drive making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

....

Only step 4 and 5 you install anything.
step 4 is longest , and should be done as the video shows.
step 5 you install an d2x file and diosmios . both i installed myself 2 times.

... can you explain more what step went wrong for him? step 4 ?
also more info will increase chances to fix his wii .

yes. it does. requires you to have sd card plugged . because you never install loader gx into the Wii, only create a shortcut on the Wii Menu to SD:/apps/usbloader/

Hi Stephaniie,

This is a great thread, and seeing that there have been recent responses is also comforting.

I had a launch Wii die last week. I had it modded with homebrew channel and a wiiclip to play some burned back up games.

My question is (although perhaps not best suited for this thread) if I were to purchase a new wii off the shelves tomorrow, would all of these steps work? What if the wii was updated to the most recent firmware?

Would it be advised to try and purchase one for cheap off craigslist instead? Please let me know your thoughts on this. Ideally I need the wii to:

-Play gamecube games (I don't know why it wouldn't)
-Run the gecko launcher in homebrew channel (To play brawl- and other brawl mods)
-Play burned games and/or launch burned games from the homebrew channel.

Thanks again.

before people get pissed. Best quote I could find ...

About BLACK Wii's : you should still be able to softmod it. the only difference is the dvd drive, it wont be able to read burnt dvd's but you can still load games from a hdd if you softmod it. or even just get a wode if you don't mind spending some money :D

White Wii's however can play burn dvd's to my knowledge . Thats the difference I know about, I also heard a rumour that Black Wiis is harder to soft-mod. Best find/buy a White Wii to be certain.

I started following the guide in the first video, but it doesn't explain what to do if you can install bootmii using the hackmii installer
Should I install it as boot2 or IOS, or skip altogether?

*sighs*
Do not skip. Install both togather.
IOS enables you to open BootMii from Homebrew Channel.
boot2 enables you to open BootMii when you start the Wii.

"Installing as boot2 is the most useful way to install BootMii, but it requires that we exploit a particularly silly bug in a part of the system that can not be changed under any circumstances. Nintendo finally fixed this bug in new Wiis that were released sometime in 2008."

Benefits having boot2 is that you can access/repair your Wii during startup. Without having to go into the Wii Menu.

When your Wii starts after installin' Boot2 you get a little menu each time. This one. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0ZZHMeOxOgU/0.jpg.
Buttons mean..
Wii - Start WiiMenu normally. Happens if you just wait 5 seconds.
The Homebrew Channel - Open Homebrew Channel
SD - To access your SD card.
Wheel icon - To Repair/Backup your Wii. We use this in step 2 to backup the Wii NAND.

Good luck with rest of installation :)

I followed this guide and so far, so good, but is there any reason why when I try to download any themes for USB loader GX, I get a message saying "Download request failed" ?

I've read a ton of threads/tutorials and I'm still a little confused.
Can I play Gamecube backups from USBLoader GX with DiosMios (not the lite ver)? Like, off the USB drive and not an SD?
I've read in some places that you need a beta revision of USBLoader GX to do it. Is that still true or has it been updated since?

EDIT: Also, if I can, do I still have to partition the USB so that Wii and Gamecube games are separate or does that not matter?

Answers:
"Can I play Gamecube backups from USBLoader GX with DiosMios (not the lite ver)? Like, off the USB drive and not an SD?"?

A: Yes. You can do both depending what you want. If you want to play from SD you install DiosMios Lite. Then place gamecube roms on SD:\games\
If you wish to play from USB you install Diosmios. Then place gamecube roms on USB:\games\

To place gamecube roms use this program : Download and Open DMToolbox v.0.3 (Windows XP version) (Works with Windows 7). Click 'black folder' in Gamecube ISO: and select your GameCube ISO file . Click 'yellow folder' in Output dir: and choose any folder (i.e. Desktop) . Finally Press Install . After installation is complete, in Desktop move the GAMEID folder to USB:\games\ . Or SD:\games\

-

As far I know SD (Diosmios Lite) and USB (Diosmios) both works on latest version of USB Loader GX .

-

Answer to : EDIT: Also, if I can, do I still have to partition the USB so that Wii and Gamecube games are separate or does that not matter?

A: It doesn't matter. Here's what I did. I formatted my external hdd to FAT32 with cluster size 32KB using FAT32 Format. Then I use WiiBackupManager to insert Wii games into USB:\wbfs\. And DMToolbox v.0.3 (Windows XP version)to create gamecube gameid folder to USB:\games\ .

If you wish to make a partition . Have one partition for wii/DOWNLOAD STUFF , and the other for ps3isos as example. You can do that with easeUS partition master - (free) http://www.partition-tool.com/landing/home-download.htm .

In easeUS . Format your USB completely. Then create two partitions. ... if you want more help, ask me.

Thanks a lot for the help earlier. I got Gamecube games to show up and be recognized by USBLoader GX. When I tried to run it though, it told me I had to install another loader and/or change the mode. The only option I really had was Devolution.

I installed it, changed the game mode to Devolution, put the "loader.dol" in the launcher directory, after doing so I got no more errors and the game appears to proceed.

Before it starts though, the screen stays black for a minute and it exits back to the homebrew channel. I don't understand what I'm missing, dx2 maybe? I swear I installed that at some point though because I'm capable of running Skyward Sword and that's a fairly "new" Wii game. Any thoughts?

i meant that when the character is pointing to the right, the bullets spawn where they should, but when he is on the right, they move to the right but the spawn point is incorrect
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Itch.io has lots of free assets also. Under the bullets behavior tab, there is a "rotate bullets" option, can try that. Or in the code can try
    - fire bullet Player.X(PlayerDirection)

That's cool tho, I'm proud of you going back to it, not giving up. It is difficult at first to learn, but fun once you get the hang of it. I think I've watched every tutorial video there is, but I still struggle sometimes to get stuff to work right. But gotta keep trying dif things, and eventually you will get it right.

I live maybe 3 minutes from a Dairy Queen, so I would just go there for ice cream anything anyways. I usually get the Oreo Blizzard, or a Peanut Buster Parfait.
