Is there a standard format/encoding used in 3DS games? Is there a writeup for this anywhere already? I've tried flicking through in a hex editor that shows various standard character encoding, and while the English unicode strings show up under UTF-16LE, I haven't found any obvious Japanese strings yet. Any hints? Cheers!

I don't think there is, I haven't encountered any text in 3DS games which isn't encoded in UTF8 or UTF16LE, so it might be plausible that the text you're looking for is saved in an image or external files instead?
Or are you absolutely sure it's in the code binary?

Thanks, turns out the hex editor I was using didn't display UTF in the text column like I expected, but only in a bar at the bottom for selected bytes. Was a pain so I've just installed a different hex editor, looks promising.
