I know this sound childsih, but it's actually a question my sis told me to ask here as she's curious to know how you were taught that.

She insists that there are 5.

I keep telling her that I was taught there's 7 continents:

• Nort America
• South America
• Europe
• Africa
• Asia
• Oceanía
• Australia

(I'm aware of the mistake of leaving out Antarctica but I'd rather leave my mistake as it is)

yes, 7 continents, you missed one though :D ;

• North America
• South America
• Europe
• Africa
• Asia
• Australia (with the islands it's referred to as Oceania)

* Antarctica

"Entonces están Asia, África, América del Norte, América del Sur, Antártida, Europa, Oceanía"
It says:
"Then there's Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Oceania"

This is from the BBC site.

You are both right - it's only a matter of loose convention. As for which to use it depends on context - when talking of pre-historic and early civilizations for example, it's important for Eurasia to be viewed as single landmass. When talking about politics further dividing those landmasses using abstract terms is (unfortunately) more accurate.

I was taught there are 7!
My sister is currently attending University and she's been taught there are 5!

@AlanJohn I'm sure Eurasia is not a thing anymore. If so... then what are Russians? Europeans? or Asians?
