Might be a silly question ;P
I've been considering a hardmod and saw this picture. Looked interesting to me and I wanted to know how to use it. Thanks hardware dudes.

With this mod, if you save a backup of your nand image using Gateway SW or RXTools, if you brick your 3DS you can connect the 3ds to a SD card reader on you pc and with a sw like winimage you can restore the previusly saved NAND backup and have again a functional 3DS.

You have tp make a NAND backup before doing any soft mod at your 3ds and the hard mode can be done only in case you should need it. You can restore only a backup from your 3DS, not frome another console
.
The mini usb port isn't really needed, it's for people that makes a lot of experiment, for a sinlge emergency use the mod can be done in a a much sipler way leaving the 3DS case opened during the NAND restore.

Micro, mini, potato, potahto.
No Its Not potato potahto, are gas and diesel the same? Of Course Not...

Do You Have Solder Skills? I Dont reccommend you to do this since it messes with the nand and you might fry it, Send it to @hundshamer and he'll do it for a good price...

This is an example of a permanent hardmod, it's basically a hard mod that is permanently soldered onto the board and using a port to access the Read/write of the NAND. The slot installed really isn't important, just as long as it's a female port and you have the proper male port soldered to your microSD adapter.

The important thing to note about using USB ports is to never directly connect a USB cable to both the 3DS and the computer, as it can and will fry the NAND chip. Always use a USB to SD adapter (those custom ones you see the hardmodders make) with a card reader.

Im going to be hardmodding my DS next week. Ill be more than happy to show you on skype. I wont be adding the usb port though. Im thinking of just putting some super velcro on the back of the ds top screen and using that to hold it when not in use :D

it's not really a "usb port" per se is it ? from what i understood, it's just a neat/clean way to have a disconnectable SD card-cable (the part you stick into an SD reader)

erm..... its still a usb port lol.
Its just so that he doesnt have a cord hanging from the ds at all times, the actual connection cord that goes to the adapter can plug in and be taken out when done.

yeah I know, but he was asking how it works, sounded like he/she thought it works as an actual usb data port :)

This^^
I downgraded and want to switch to arm9 but wont until my hardmod is done.
Anyways, the above hardmod is exactly the same as any other hardmod. You solder to DAT0, CLK, CMD and your ground, and then attach the cable to a breakout of *-usb port, as shown here and here.
