I so rarely do this because updating always breaks something and I can't be fucked spending half a day fixing it.

If I understand correctly the process goes like this.

- Do a NAND backup
- Download the update and copy it to your micro SD card
- Update using Daybreak
- Update all homebrew apps by downloading the latest version and copying them to the micro SD card

Is this correct? What are the best apps for overclocking and swapping between docked and handheld flags now?

Upgrade/update every homebrew apps and necessary files before updating the firmware. That way you won't lock out yourself into accessing them later or could possibly give you a problem.

Sys-clk for overclocking and ReverseNX-RT is what I used to swapping docked and handheld mode.

1. Uninstall any themes (homescreen, lock screen, app screen, settings screen, whatever) using NXThemes Installer
2. Update any homebrew apps, sysmodules and tesla/ultrahand overlays if possible as some require to be compiled with newer libnx versions in order to work with newer firmwares
3. Update Hekate and Atmosphére + Sigpatches
4. Install new firmware using Daybreak
5. Optional: Install themes again using NXThemes Installer (it should prompt to dump your home menu first)

Edit: You don't need to do a NAND backup every time you update. Do it once while your sysNAND is clean (including BOOT0 and BOOT1) and your fine. You could always restore that and manually update it via Atmosphére + Daybreak to whatever FW you need.
