How do you 'charge' in fighting games?

I just can't find out how to do this, but on games like Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter there are some moves that require you to "charge", and I just have no idea how to do this.

edit: shit I didnt mean to put this in gbatemp questions...
 
The best known Street Fighter charge moves are M.Bison's Psycho Crusher and Guile's Flash Kick, as mentioned above thes require you to hold the joypad in the opposie direction to the move for around 2 seconds. Guile's move is a simple hold down to charge, but left/right charge attcks take some skill as you can end up moving too far from your opponent for the attack to hit - the trick is to hold a diagonal back/down position then move smoothly to a forward position and hit the necessary attack button.
