just to clarify the pokemon games (well at least the main ones, not the puzzle games) are actually the exact same version for all regions, even retail carts, for this reason you can even insert a out of region cart on your system and it would show up unlike any other game which ordinarily would just not show up, the only reason why the retail cart fails to launch on a out of region system is that the update check fails as the update on the cart is out of region....other than the update the game is exactly the same for all regions, and seeing as cia files do not come with updates the actual version users buy from the eshop is region free

TLDR: pokemon is by default region free when installed as a cia, just go grab the update from the eshop and it will work fine
physical EU pokemon games work on NA console?

Thank you for the explanation, I was actually wondering for a while now, why the retail cartridges wouldn't work on out of region systems when the rom and the game were the same for each region. Heck, their title ID even says it should be region-free (ECRA, EK2A, etc)

Similarly, Ocarina of Time 3D, at least the NA version, will show up properly on Japanese systems when inserted, complete with japanese banner and everything (or at least it did when I messed around with region-changing), but won't boot. I'm pretty sure that whether the game shows up or not depends on if the rom contains the relevant banner and title information for that region, independently of the game data being the exact same between regions, and OoT3D for some reason contains the Japanese banner and title data along with the English ones. Unsure about other regions, or if the Japanese version of the game has the English title and banner.

The Pokémon games contain all the banners and title info for all regions, a given since the game is the same regardless of region. I had no idea that the reason why it wouldn't boot was because of the update check, though.

That being said, the update is the exact same regardless of region. You wouldn't be able to find region-specific update .cias even if you tried. Best to just download the update straight off the eShop.

k, it still isnt that bad. If you have under 100kb/s then you're screwed.

I have 95kbps max in this day and age and I still do everything :P

When I want to download HUGE files ( Like GTA V with it's 65gbs ) I go with my dad to his office, because it's 1.7mbps there. Or I use my dad's phone as a router because it has 4G and no cap unlike other phone services.
