Is this a good idea.

Or should i quit before I kill myself with flying metal balls.

That design wouldn't work. Sorry.

Also, don't play with projectile weapons, you'll put your eye outTM.

The electromagnets will attract the metal balls, and they will remain attracted. Because the electromagnet is so powerful, the tube could rupture or even explode. If this design is meant to kill the user, than yes I'd say it could work.

No.

Guns + Christmas time = eye out. Everybody knows that.

That design will kill the user instantly try again please. No playing with destructive futuristic technologies, you'll attract the authorities unless you did that in a campus lab for a science project. The right thing to do is to test stuff like that out in the country where no one is looking.

*examines the schematic*
So.... feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.....
Trigger actuates the hammer,
Hammer strikes the high-power magnets,
Steel shot exits the barrel?

Having a hammer strike high powered magnets wouldn't provide much, if any forward force on the shot. If anything, the magnets would be shattered, as most high-power magnets are rather fragile, from what I've been told. Any force that did get transmitted through the magnets wouldn't be enough to separate the shot from the magnets.

Take a look at this gauss-gun project.
It might help you revise your design.

Something else you should take a glance at is the "coilgun".

Several similar projects exist... here is an ultra simple one: Micro Gauss Rifle

Not to sound like a broken record, but please do your research first, if you are playing around with these with no knowledge it is dangerous.

The whole point of a gauss cannon is to build acceleration and have each ball transfer all of its kinetic energy to the next ball. You can't do that if you have all of the balls together like that. There has to be a magnet between each ball to keep building the momentum until all of the kinetic energy is transferred to the final ball. Here's a simple one. Just by watching the video you can figure out how it works and you'll probably be able to copy the design on your own for much cheaper.

Of course, if you're using magic like p1ngpong says, then yours is probably superior to what our mere mortal science is capable of.
