I'm pretty new to Wii U hacking and today added homebrew for the first time on my Wii U. I believe I have everything setup correctly and have already succesfully set up games from wii u usb helper onto my regular flashdrive, but that has barely any space and I want to use my external harddrive to store my games instead. I am currently using a WD My Passport Ultra with 1 TB of storage as the external harddrive and the Wii U formats it successfully, but when I go to WUP Installer and choose to store a game on my usb everything freezes during installation. Does anybody know how to fix this i'm not sure if I'd just be better off getting a bigger flashdrive?

Hello.:)

How is your HDD Connected/which USB Port(s) did you used please ?

EDIT: This is only for vWii and USBLoader GX
The HDD(s) only working correct on the BACK USB Ports:

(I am sorry, please excuse me for this Misinformation....)

Did your HDD have an external Power Supply ?
Do you have used an USB Y-Cable for the HDD ?

Maybe this helps you for your Issue.

Thank you.:)

Hello,

Does your hard drive have a Y recommended cable? , for a better connection.

Did you try "wup gx2 installer" ??

To install your game, in your file, you do not need significant letters ==> *, +, £, or other symbols (you must delete them), only the letters of the alphabet.

@alexander1970 :

My external hard drive is plugged into the front of the console, and it works like a charm:P;):yayu:

If you haven't already done so, it is recommended to disable sleep mode for attached external Hard Drives.

Info on how to do this can be found HERE, disabling this function will probably not solve your issue but it does help once you sort out your install to usb hard drive issue.

Is it just the one game your having issues with installing? have you tried installing another game(s)?

What WUP installer are you using? WUP Installer GX2 or WUPINSTALLER Y MOD? If it's one or the other, maybe try the other?

Do you have anything else connected to your USB ports on the WiiU besides your ext usb hard drives?

What if you connect back your Flash Drive, are you STILL able to install games without issues?

Have you got another SD CARD you can test?

Added Notes:
Worst case scenario, the usb hard drive your using may not be compatible with the WiiU, the WiiU supports a lot of usb hard drives and I have seen some cases in the past that there are a few that just doesn't play nice.
Just a side note, since your using a flash drive, it's not really recommended, even Nintendo says it's not recommended to use a flash drive. Even though it works, depending on the flash drive, the speed may not be up to scratch and you may experience longer than normal loading times.

Thank you for the reply, I realized that I am currently not using a Y cable and that's most likely the problem since I don't think it has an external power supply either. When I first connected the hard drive (it's a usb 3.0) to the front of the console the Wii U couldn't format it but when I connected it to the back of the console the wii u could format it. I am not using vWII as I don't really find any need for it and am using WUP Installer GX2 to install wii u games. Do you have any idea where I could find a Y cable and does it need to be in the front of the console? I'm sorry I'm a newb to all of this so I wouldn't really be sure how to set up a Y cable.

@xs4all I will definitely try disabling sleep mode and using the other WUP Installer. I believe the problem is the external hard drive because i've tried more than one game on the external hdd and they fail to work, but when I disconnect the external hdd and install them onto the flash drive instead they work. I really wanted to use the external hdd but in the meantime I guess my 64 gb flashdrive will do, thank you for the reply.

With the Y Cable it should work in both "Sides" of the Wii U.:)
For "better accessibility" you should use the rear Ports.
If you use the USB Receiver for Guitar Hero for Example or an Gamecube Controller Adapter it is maybe easier to use the Front Ports for this Devices.:)

For the Y Cable it depends which USB Connector your HDD Enclosure have.

For Example mine have this one:

USB-A to 2xUSB-A

You can look on Amazon or Aliexpress for it.
Good luck
Thank you.:)

I dare say not using a Y cable is most likely your issue, the usb ports does not have enough juice to fully power the usb hard drive, even though the WiiU can recognise it and format it but not enough for general use.
As Pizzaz advised, since your using a usb 3.0 hard drive make sure you get the correct Y cable, check the hard drive and see what connector it's using 3 and buy accordingly.

Best to use the rear usb ports, cant remember if it matters but the main usb plugs needs to connect to the bottom usb port and the other usb cable that supplies extra power goes in the top usb port

Good luck.

Hello,

for information:

You can use either the rear or front ports for Wii U mode.

For vwii mode, preferably at the back.

Myself, my drive is connected to the front (Wii U mode with Y cable), and it works like a charm.:yayu:
