Why is it that as soon as I install the universal updater it gives me a new update, then another, and then as soon as I launch the universal updater it uninstalls automatically. What can I do?

It shouldn't do that. have you checked your sd card with h2testw yet? If not, you should. Make sure it's completely empty before doing the test. and obv store your data somewhere safe beforehand as well

I haven't done it yet but thank you. I have the latest version of Luma3ds "13.3.2" unless there is a new version.

You're not the only one encountering this issue, I'm also having the same issue in both the cia and 3dsx versions. There is an endless update loop, it seems like they broke something in the latest update. I doubt it has something to do with the SD card since more people are having the same problem.

There is another person that has the same issue reported in GitHub.

This is very intriguing, because Universal-Updater hasn't even had stable releases in a short while. For people affected by this, may I ask:

1. Before this issue, when was the last time you had used Universal-Updater?
2. Do you know/remember whether you had configured the app to check for nightly updates?
3. (Sort of a continuation on the above) Can you show the contents of /3ds/Universal-Updater/Config.json (from your SD Card)?

For instance, my Config.json reads as follows:

JSON:
{
    "Active_Theme": "Default",
    "Archive_Path": "sdmc:",
    "AutoUpdate": true,
    "CustomFont": false,
    "Display_Changelog": false,
    "Firm_Path": "sdmc:/luma/payloads",
    "Language": "en",
    "LastStore": "universal-db.unistore",
    "List": false,
    "MetaData": false,
    "NDS_Path": "sdmc:",
    "Prompt": true,
    "Shortcut_Path": "sdmc:/3ds/Universal-Updater/shortcuts",
    "UpdateCheck": true,
    "UpdateNightly": false,
    "UseBG": false,
    "Version": 1,
    "_3DSX_InFolder": false,
    "_3DSX_Path": "sdmc:/3ds"
}

Meaning it will check for updates but not Nightly updates. And it is running fine, without the issue you mention.
(Notice the "UpdateCheck" and "UpdateNightly" options.)

If your Config.json sets "UpdateNightly" as true, first of all try changing that to false.

Then if that doesn't solve the issue, you could try disabling auto-update altogether by setting "UpdateCheck" as false. That should hopefully be a stopgap solution until this is actually fixed (since it should stop the app from trying to update itself).

I had the issue as well. Also several people on reddit. UU tried to self update, and ended up as datagarbage. Fix:.Go to your PC, download UU from the official site to your sd-card and reinstall from that on the 3ds.

So after reinstalling once it should not re-enter the self-update loop?
That makes me think a bit more strongly that this might have affected people who had opted for nightly updates, but it's still only a conjecture of course.

  1. I can't remember when I last used the app, but according to Activity Log the last time I used it was on the 12th of March 2025.
  2. I don't remember explicitly enabling nightly updates.
  3. I checked the Config.json file and "UpdateNightly" was set to "true", the weird thing is that, as I already mentioned, I don't remember explicitly enabling such option. When I set it to "false" the app launches without any problem.
Thanks for the tip, now I can use Universal Updater. I recommend anyone having issues to check the Config.json file. I still don't know how the nightly updates option was enabled, but I wonder if it somehow was accidentally enabled by an update at some point or other kind of user interaction, since so many people are having the same issue.

Glad to know this helped. Also probably useful for the devs to know that this must be an issue introduced recently, since it doesn't affect the current stable release.
