Hi I have been trying to get in to patch a game called genso suikoden tsumugareshi hyakunen no toki there was a project to translate it but I think its dead cant really find anything about it does anyone on here know?

Plus I got to the point where I load the game on umdgen so I can see all the files now how do I figure out which one has Dialouge to translate? Srry NOOB HERE
I think I need to know how it is encoded UTF8, UTF16, right?

Thanks for any help.

You plan to translate a RPG in the Suikoden franchise on a relatively unhacked system (as far as emulators, tools and knowledge goes anyway) as your first hack? Assuming you can not pull any info from the other project (especially why it stalled as it could have been nasty technical issues) you may have bitten off more than you can chew at this point in time.

Are you otherwise a translator? If so ( http://gbatemp.net/threads/densetsus-translation-toolbox.311523/ runs down what it tends to take when it comes to translating games) you might be able to make some headway as you wait for a hacker to come along but if you are not then we are back to the previous section where you may find yourself in over your head.

UMDgen works well enough as a file extraction tool, after that the techniques are largely the same for any console. Here is our GBA and DS guide http://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-rom-hacking-documentation-project-rewritten-for-2012.73394/
Emulator wise I have not really kept up and though games playing emulators are not in abundance you probably could get something done for a hacker/debugger sort of thing to say nothing of the hardware level debugging options are not bad either.

The question has been asked before

You might also be able to pull some info from the project threads of

Generally though you have asked a fairly broad question that can and has taken book length things to answer. If you are having trouble with a concept or a specific part of the game then someone might be able to help but that is usually where people have to draw the line lest they end up typing out a whole guide.

Sure what part of the process are you having trouble with?

Ohhhhhhhhhh.

How's your Japanese Kanji reading ability?
