my N3DS is a Japanese unit running 9.1 - 20J, I own both Gateway and Sky3DS (blue button). I recently bought a legit FF explore game cartridge too. What is the best way to set it up so it can play some of the games (in my PC) online ? Last thing I remember I did was flashing a 4.5 MSET so I didn't have to boot with Cubic ninja everytime I power it off. Advice is greatly appreciated, and please include link if there is one. Thanks !!

Insert your retail cartridge and boot into gateway menu using the profile exploit. (Settings -> Other Settings -> Profile -> Nintendo DS Profile)
Scroll over to Backup 3ds Game Cartridge & do that.
Once done, turn off the N3ds & take out the mSD behind the backplate. Connect it to your computer and remove the game you just backed up.
Launch Gateway Rom Patcher v1.1 - Load rom - Extract Header to File - save file to computer
Check the change to .3dz option if it's not.
Load the rom you want to go online with.
Import Header from file *The file you exported and saved*
Apply & accept any popups.
Your loaded rom will now be .3dz & have your private header injected. It is now online ready.

You could use the Sky3ds to play games online as well, but it's a fair bit more of a hassle to use imo.

*If you have saves for any game you are going to inject a header into, you'll want to download SaveDataFiler.cia & install that and back them up, they won't work once you inject the header until you import the backups from SaveDataFiler*

Thanks a lot, and I understand the steps. But I thought if I do this, the N3DS will prompt me for update the firmware, and if I don't update, it won't let me play online........that true?

No you can just download game updates from the Eshop using a spoofer you dont need to update your 3DS ever

You don't need to be on the latest firmware to play online, so long as your game is up to date, you can go online with it. :)

If you download an update from the Eshop, it's already installed. You download and install .cia files from a certain iso site that you'll have to google.

After I downloaded the patch from eShop, it still prompts to update the game thru eshop when I start the game.........

In my data management, I can see the patch is downloaded, but when I try to play online, it gives me an error code which is the version is not the most updated and asked me to download in eShop......

Did you check the eshop again? Idk how eshop updates work; if they're all in one or if you have to download each one.
Are you using a US version of the game? Doubt that's it, but may as well ask.

I checked again in eshop, I cannot redownload it unless I delete it in my data management which i also tried and still no go. The version of the game is correct, everything is in JPN after I launch the game.
I also tried google for that cia, no luck :(. It is MH4G patch 1.2

Odd, I have an update notice for the game, but I was able to go online and join anothers game.

Also i'm only seeing patch 1.1 in the eshop. Did you install a 1.2 jpn patch?

Yes, I installed patch 1.2. Everything is fixed now and I can play online, the original rom I had was tempered somehow, I redownloaded it from another site and it works now with the new rom.
Thanks a lot for the help !!
