.3pl wouldn't be a bad extension name, conforms to the original 3 character standard and isn't used by any os' by default.

i found .3gx really interesting but still i like .ctrgp more sounds cashy.
(hope i get to see this new plugin before the open heart surgery)

Hey guys, it's been a while :)

So, I'm currently working on a new plugin system builtin luma3DS.
This plugin system will fix issues like:
  • Impossibility to change the application (freeze at 3DS logo)
  • Impossibility to use applets or home button with huge plugins like ctrpf
And now, I'm confronted to a choice I have to do, the name of the plugin file !

I have several options (feel free to propose yours if you find something cool), and I'd like to get your opinion on the question.
For now, the name is 3DS Game eXtension - .3dsgx, but it can be anything else until the release.

Thanks a lot ! :)
Since it's not technically limited to just games, I don't think it should be called any of those things. How about .crx? (short for CTR Extension and at the same time similar to the .prx of the PSP days which adds some familiarity and makes it easily recognizable)
I made it 3 characters because I feel anything longer is too long. 3 characters is the standard.

Hmm, it's true that it's technically not limited to game, but the loader limits the plugin usage to non-homebrew app.
And there's not much non game app worth to get a plugin, at least I think.

Btw, do you know what the r means in .prx ? Tried to google it, but couldn't find it.

A side note: 3 characters in a file extension is not a standard. It was a technical limit of old filesystem, which is not the case for 20 years. ^_^
I agree that it's the most common length used, but calling it a standard is not true. Calling it a convention would be more accurate. :P

This post perfectly state my thought on the 3 characters extension 'limit'.
It was written in 2010 and as years passes, it's more and more true.

Except for that, .crx is not bad. Just want to know what the original r means.

Guess I should have said defacto standard :P
I think Sony came up with .prx, they probably never explained what it means.
I just think longer file extensions look messy. 4 characters should be absolute max (so .ctrx would be acceptable too)

Ah I see.

Maybe Playstation Raw eXecutable.

I have ask Hackinformer and coldbird and total noob none of the know where the prx extension came from only that is a executable that the psp uses for everything not only plugins, even the media player or photo app ended with. Prx. So you maybe right is a raw form of executable for Sony Psp.
