Honestly? The simplest design is the best. Take Chrome, Explorer or any other majorly used program. You'll notice they don't try to make their programs flashy or anything. Blending in with a cohesive UI is always preferred.

Repeat the process a few times, and you'll see that certain lines of code keeps getting used. Once you notice this, you'll slowly but surely start understanding more and more of what you're copying, to the point where you feel like you truly understand what your program does. At that point, I would challenge you to redo these simple projects without relying on an online resource.
