and "ossum" sound cards are good (not neccesary but add depth to game experiences and are great with music and movies)

this one is the one my brother has and it makes movies and games sound a huge amount better even if you have a 2.1 speaker setup like him
check out the other more affordable sound cards by CREATIVE as some are still good even if they are not quite as awesome

You only need a sound card if you're a true audiophile. The integrated sound on motherboards are more than good enough for me... that said, my motherboard has a PCIex1 X-Fi sound card included.

I think he wants a really good pc though, minium i5, 4gb ram, 1gb mid range gpu etc.

Actually, saying that the PhenomII X6 is roughly 1/3 of a second Gen Core i5 is kinda accurate when it comes to gaming. PhenomII has been around for some time now, and the best PhenomII X6 1090T BE has about 30% less performance than the last Gen Core i7 930. Now the Core i5-2500K and Core i7-2600K will wipe the floor with it in most tests. The Core i7-2600K even beats a Core i7-980X in most tests, and costs a third of the price.

The new generation of AMD Fusion CPUs (Bobcat for laptops, Bulldozer for desktops) are supposed to be able to compete with Intel's CPUs, although Bulldozer won't be out until the end of the year (roughly when Intel IvyBridge is supposed to be released to replace SandyBridge).

Tigger, you don't get 8Ghz RAM. Also, you will never need RAM above 1600Mhz.
Also, it's a bad idea to recommend multi-GPU setups as that would introduce micro stuttering which is very bad if you're trying to play a game.

I usually get ram faster than necessary to allow for overclocking by raising the fsb, though with the i7 2600k i suppose it is not necessary.

I dunno about the dual cards, i suppose a single 6990 or gtx 590 would do.

Intel series 6 chipsets can't use more than 1333Mhz RAM. I only say 1600Mhz because some motherboards, when over clocking the CPU, will under clock the RAM.

As for 6990 and 590, it's just as bad as dual 6970 or 580 - multi-GPU setups cause micro stuttering. That's why having a single 6970 or 580 is the best setup for gaming rigs.

Is a single 6970 or gtx580 gonna handle say a 30" monitor @ 2560x1600 though? im guessing some people do have them monster monitors. or even a tri monitor eyefinity setup.

Tbh i have always said multi card setups suck, but for a very boss gaming desktop like the op said, i only suggested xfire/sli because they are quite boss.

Ok, I'm just going to quote CPC magazine for the "best hardware money can buy".

CPU: Core i7-2600K (better than an i7-980X at a third of the price)
Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV Extreme (the Z version hasn't been reviewed yet).
RAM: Corsair Dominator GT CMGTX7
SSD: OCZ Vertex 3 (significantly faster than the Crucial M4 series)
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6970 2GB (yes, they did test twin GTX 580, and even twin GTX 590, and twin HD6990 too, but after all that testing they decided the severe microstuttering and slower performance in games makes CrossFireX and SLI a stupid choice).
Case: Silverstone Fortress FT02B-W V1.7 (one of the cases that rotates the motherboard by 90-degrees) for air, Silverstone TJ07 for water-cooled.
CPU Cooler: Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro (for air - it's more difficult to create a comprehensive recommendation for water-cooled systems)
PSU: Corsair HX850.
Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro
Monitor: Viewsonic VP2365WB.

FYI, whilst multi-GPU setups provide good performance in EyeFinite setups, the microstuttering is not worth it. Also, a single single-GPU flagship graphics card can work pretty well in EyeFinite. IMO, playing games in ludicrously high resolutions is stupid. I normally use a simple 22" LCD-TV + an old 17" monitor, but I have used my computer on my 42" TV and I just didn't like it.
