Misc HELP: first time connecting Wii to internet

1. will my modded wii get bricked (wiikey) if i connect my unit to the internet (to play online games) or if I have my wii firmware updated?
2. what is the latest wii firmware version? do i need to update my wii firmware? is there an option NOT to update my firmware when my Wii is connected to the internet?
