So, this is sort of inspired by Silrae's Trio of Towns True Love Edition patch. I would like to do the same sort of thing for Harvest Moon Tale of Two Towns 3D (the one released for the 3ds). I'm thinking I could make a patch that would swap the sprites for the main character, and edit the dialogue for the characters accordingly. I've found a file that I believe may hold most of the character dialogue from unpacking the cia, named people_tex_data.bin. Unfortunately, I have very little experience with ROM hacking, and I've run into a snag. I've been trying to use kuriimu to help me edit the dialogue, but I can't even open the file using kuriimu, as it says the file format isn't supported. As far as trying to decompress it, in case that's the issue, I can't figure out what kind of compression it might be. I realize I might be out of my depth here, but this patch is something I really want to do, and I'd appreciate any sort of help or guidance with this. Thanks in advance.
edit: for anyone one else who might have had a similar problem, using v9 of HackingToolkit3DS did the trick, thank you to NicheGamer for their advice!
For the sprite swap, I can't seem to find much about how to do it. Some people have said that renaming the sprite files would work, but I can't seem to find the base avatar sprites, only clothing. I would like to know how the game retrieves the sprites to use when you select a gender. I've found the file that handles the selection, but there's no indication where the files themselves might be stored. (At least, not to me, but I don't have much experience with this)
