No dude... like... that's how's supposed the game to work.
Once you die you start all over again.
Also, if you're desperately tryin to save your kid's progress as they play the game you can use FCGEUX and literally make Save States as they play.

That's all you can do, but like, hacking the rom to implement a Save function... No you can't. At least I'm not aware of such hack.

Super Mario Bros. on the NES doesn't save, that's how the game works. If you're using emulators, and you look for "hacks", go look for one called Super Mario All Stars NES.

It's a modification of Super Mario Bros 3 that contains, SMB1, SMB2, SMB3 and SMB Lost Levels in one single package with a saving function. Alternatively, you can look for the original Super Mario All Stars on the Super Nintendo.

If you're playing that game through a Virtual Console release, the only way of saving your progress TEMPORARILY is to leave the game through the Wii Home Button menu. It will create a temporal save that will be loaded next time the game is booted up, and also erased.

Ah OK I thought you could at least save when you get to the end of a level eg 1-6 but if they don't beat the castle then it goes back to like 1-4
