can a system update kill this method? say if we are on 11.3 by the time I get the new 3ds.
Potentially any update could. That's the reason the other methods exist. But as of right now the current firmware 11.2 is fine & it'll be unlikely they'll do an update in the next couple of weeks. If they did, just wait to see if people see 11.3 is compatible and if not back to ctr-httpwn

In fact you can "fix" the error message about the NNID being already on other console by doing the following instructions. After following them, your games tied to your NNID won't be visible anymore in the home menu, but you can simply use CIAngel for reinstalling the ticket (after accessing the eShop with the NNID removed), and they'll appear again in the home menu.

Situation Not Resolved:
  1. If the issue persists for more than 24 hours, go to the system's HOME menu. Select “System Settings,” then select “Nintendo Network ID Settings.”
  2. Select “Sign In.” Enter the password associated to the Nintendo Network ID, then “Confirm.”
  3. The error message (“You cannot use this Nintendo Network ID on this console”) will appear on the screen.
  4. While the error message is onscreen, hold down the X button AND Y button, and tap “OK.”
  5. Select “Yes” to unlink the Nintendo Network ID from the system.
  6. You will receive a message that the NNID link has been removed. Tap “OK” to return to the system settings.
  7. You can now re-link the Nintendo Network ID to the system, which should resolve the issue. How to
    • Purchases associated to the system / NNID will still be available for re-download. More info

Still, I think it's a lot easier to backup your NAND, format without SD card inserted, buy LoE, do the transfer without NNID. After the transfer, relink NNID on source console, and restore NAND backup then. You're done, no need to wait a full week, nor to call Nintendo, and your NNID is intact and working in your source console.
Can I format target 3ds now that I have A9LH and Luma3ds and set up a new NNID on it? I don't need the old username, I don't have any purchases in it. Can the same be done for the sourse 3ds? If possible, can I set up a new NNID and restore my nand backups on both?

In source console, you can:

1. Restore NAND backup from pre-transfer.
2. Do the steps explained above.
3. Re-install missing tickets from games if needed (after doing the steps above, games from eShop won't be shown in the home menu, reinstalling tickets with CIAngel makes them appear again).

4. Create and link a new NNID.

In target, simply System Format and link a new NNID.

in target 3ds, can I remove the SD card, format, then use back the full SD card or should I format sd card as well and start from scratch?

If your target SD doesn't have data you care about, simply format, don't extract the SD card. This is for the games data not to be erased.

done, formatted and setting up/installing on target 3ds now from scratch

just to be clear, can I or not do the same, format and set up from scratch on old/source 3ds and create a new nnid? don't care about purchases or data

EDIT: unlinked the source 3ds as per your notes - re-linking cannot be done as it says nnid is active on another 3ds (which is not true as I formatted the other one but didn't do the un-linking with x+y or is this not needed?) or do I have to wait 24h?

This is what I thought would happen. Gotta wait a week now to transfer back

What I posted is exactly for "unlinking" without formatting the 3DS when it shows error because you restored a NAND with a transferred NNID. Did you understand something different from it?

Do the unlinking as it says with X and Y buttons and you can link another NNID after that. If you lose some games from being shown in the home menu, simply reinstall the ticket using CIAngel, no need to actually reinstall the games.

Ah I misunderstood. So instead of unlinking 3ds before transfer and making a nand backup (unlinked), you can just forego unlinking before you make a nand backup and then follow those steps to unlink within the 3ds menus... Cool! I'll have to try it

I'm not sure if I understood exactly what you meant.

With this you can do:
1. NAND back up your 3DS with a NNID,
2. then transfer the NNID without formatting,
3. restore NNID,
4. "unlink" via the method I posted without formatting,
5. re-install your missing tickets and you can re-link another NNID (not the same it had, of course).

Yeah exactly as I thought, good to know.
Well that's another option then op

Well, if you got steelhax, it should load on 11.2, so you could go ahead and update the stock console to 11.2, you would steel be able to use steelhax, and no need to ctr httpwn.

Just to warn people. My system transfer failed and now I have a new3ds on 11.2 with no way of using slowhax in the future. If I did this all over again I would avoid updating to 11.2.

it said the trans was complete. Then said something like "checking to verify ability to transfer" then if failed with error code

I could only find that error code in this thread: https://boards.fireden.net/vg/thread/138351523/

The person had the very same problem back in April, and it's a really strange code because it isn't documented anywhere.

Just to make sure. Both consoles were on 11.2, and you had both the DSiWare game and Steelhax on source console with an active NNID. Right?

Edit: Oh, and the hacked console had A9LH and updated SysNAND, right?

Last edited by Olmectron,
One last question. are you using updated SysNAND, or EmuNAND with A9LH?

SysNAND

I did the SD Computer method data swap. Put cards back in 3ds. The little animated guys did there thing moving data around. 100% was hit. Then that message about verifying ability to trans. then the error code.

new 3ds ended up freshly formatted. the 2ds was wiped. 2ds after restore has the "NNID not associated with this device message. "

Really unfortunate, never seen the error. Don't worry about it though, you can just try again in a week. Did the transfer go through at all?

The transfer didn't go through at all even though it looked like it was about to. Are you sure I can try again in a week?

Right now my 2ds is giving me that NNID error.
