I'd say its a remake, the screen shown is very familiar. Also from that shot it looks like a SNES game which is welcoming for me.

Now if only Capcom would give us Bionic Commando: Rearmed.

Excellent news, the Gradius games are my all-time favourite... Although in the UK we prefer to call them Nemesis, Salamander and Vulcan Venture

I can't wait for this one... Hopefully it will give me the blasty-goodness that I've been lacking since the (frankly horrible) Star Soldier came out.

::EDIT:: I have a feeling it's a remake of Gradius/Nemesis as the screenshot on IGN looks very similar to level 3 of Gradius:

Gradius and Nemesis are two different games, not different names for the same game.

I think I've possibly got mixed up with Salamander (cos that may be a spin-off) but my memory and Wikipedia are telling me that Nemesis was the European release name for Gradius: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gradius

Nemesis = Gradius
Salamander = Life Force
Vulcan Venture = Gradius 2

I was a little unsure myself, so i did a little digging. It turns out there is ALSO a separate "Nemesis" out for the Gameboy... Way to make this easy Konami!

Yeah, I definitely played Nemesis on the original Gameboy. Quite a bit, although I can't remember if I was ever able to beat it. Glad we got that straightened out, or I was going to have to go fix that Wikipedia article.

If it's a remake, I doubt it's a remake of an SNES game. If I'm not mistaken, there was only Gradius III on the SNES, and the graphics of Gradius Rebirth don't look any better than Gradius III.

Look at this, though:
Gradius Rebirth:

Gradius III:

Those round projectiles look practically identical, everything else looks different, though. Coincidence?

I'm hoping it'll be an entirely new game, or if it's a remake of Gradius 1/2, let's hope at least the level design is different. A slight graphical update won't do it for me, to be honest

We'll just have to await more screenshots or the final game because those weapons and Moai heads appear to be in several Gradius games. I don't care, I just want some Gradius goodness - there's nothing like a decent shoot-em-up to help me de-stress and at the moment I have to rely on Nanostray2 on the NDS

Screenshots look like a VC game. Seriously, I'm a huge shmup nerd, but they should really improve graphics, if they expect me to buy the game. A modern-day Gradius would be awesome. I'm not talking about vectorized or even 3D graphics, but high(er)-res sprites and modern effects would be nice.

Something more like Mars Matrix for the Dreamcast would be incredibly nice, both in terms of gameplay and graphics. Even better, would be something even more advanced than that, considering that game is almost 10 years old

Well I really liked the hi-res graphic in Gradius IV both the arcade and the PS2 version, in fact it seems unconceivable to go back and set for anything less then that.
Gameplay wise, you cant' do much better then that, Gradius it's always been my absolutely favorite horizontal shooter of choice, ever since the 80s !

Easter island heads? thoses were in Gradius Galaxies too you know.

Aaaaaactually, the Moai heads have been in just about every Gradius game thus far, though were notably absent in V for some reason. They're pretty much iconic to the series as a whole, as are the high-speed levels and the final boss that takes zero effort to kill.
