Before, you had to be connected in online matchups to play with other people. But what if you wanted to play with an IRL friend right next to you, or maybe just an acquaintance on the same bus? Well, now you can do it more seamlessly because

IMO this is a game changer for Android.

Hmm, wonder if this could be slightly subverted for hotspot making.

You say this low hotspots are anything but trivial to make on Android?

This has been possible for like at least 5 years using bluetooth on iOS?

I was thinking more from the no hotspots/tethering network providers angle.

Bluetooth connect and play has also been on Android but I'm guessing this "new" feature is without Bluetooth but i could be wrong.

There are tons of apps that had local multiplayer already.

Pretty sure this "update" is for the Google Play Games app, not some new Android feature.

After some research, it is indeed an update for the Google Play Games app. As such, I'm going to change the title to reflect this and move it into the Android section as, in my opinion, an update to an app isn't as newsworthy as new features to an OS.

To summarize the news, Google Play Apps can create a local lobby for Google Play Games-enabled apps, so you can play with people nearby. This isn't a new feature in Android altogether, just some Google Play Games-enabled apps.

It's a bit more like streetpass for 3DS. It uses your location, internet, and bluetooth to find nearby players that you pass by.

I've updated the article with an android police link and their screenshot.
