Most/all of them are probably going to be worse than the original.
Not that the original is all that great either. Some models have problems with the paint flaking off. My cousin's blue n3DS XL had all of the paint flaking off where he held it within months.
I haven't seen anyone actually comment on the quality of them so I can't definitely answer your question, but I'd say look on AliExpress where you can actually post reviews on a product, people tend to be pretty vocal about bad quality products so you'd probably find a ton of angry reviews on bad quality ones.
In the end whatever you get will probably work just fine. It might feel cheap but it probably won't break unless you abuse it.

wow so i see i am not the only one this has happened to
and i babied my console it has never left the house and never even been exposed to sun light or any temp above or below room temp
always stored draped with a microfiber cloth and not even used that much
same happened to me
Nintendo should send us new plates this is an obvious defect

My cousin doesn't exactly baby his console, he's pretty young after all. Still that shouldn't happen within such a short amount of time. Maybe after years of heavy use that could be expected, but even then a quality product optimally shouldn't do that.
I think it might be because the metallic paint on the n3DS XL doesn't adhere very well to the plastic. None of my 3DSes have had that problem (o3DS, o3DS XL and small n3DS), not even the o3DS which did use metallic paint, but I guess it's a different brand or something.
Plastic is rather tricky to paint to begin with, people doing custom paints on plastic devices will tell you that you need to sand the surface, apply primer, then apply the paint itself, otherwise the paint won't stick.
I usually put crystal cases on my consoles, all my 3 3DSes have had a crystal case for most of my time owning them which obviously helps a lot in preventing this sort of thing. They're cheap and give the consoles some protection if I want to throw one in my pocket without the pouch or something. And they still fit in the pouches with the crystal case on, so I see no reason not to get crystal cases.

huh my metallic paint seems to be just fine it is the translucent blue film layer on top of it that is all flaking off i can see the metallic underneath it
it has diagonal stripes th elue paint flakes are clear underneath it is like mirror shiny i wonder if it is even pait of a sticker or something else
whatever it is the clear blue layer didn't stick to it so well at all

Ah I didn't realize it was in multiple layers. On my cousin's 3DS it just looks black underneath. Might be metallic black, I didn't look very closely.
It's kinda shiny but that's probably more because the plastic itself is a bit glossy. That could explain why it doesn't adhere though. As I said before, paint doesn't adhere well to smooth plastic. Or any smooth surface really.
They should have fixed this problem before release. Can't really blame them for it though, they would have had to test them for months to actually discover the issue.
I wonder how many others are also experiencing this? Seems like it should be happening to all n3DS XL units by now.

yeah no mine is like a mirror underneath ,it still has the diagonal striping that can be seen though the blue layer in the light
a really shiny bright silver metallic and stripe of less shiny metallic it really does look like metal
i was thinking of trying to peel off all the blue so i have a nice metallic top and bottom plate since the bottom plate is also starting to peel
but it will clash with the blue interior i think it would have been better on a black N3ds XL since the black one has some metallic in it

You could always buy a broken 3DS and take the shell from it. That way you know you're getting original parts. If you find one so broken that it's difficult or expensive to fix it should be cheap.
Only problem is that the case might have wear and tear on it but hey it's still better than flaking paint. Though it might start flaking again if you don't use a crystal case.
