The US doesn't produce much, mostly as a result of very high labor costs compared to other countries - and off shoring for decades

As such we import more than we export - and our products are expensive - so even the ones we make other countries don't necessarily want (again labor costs)

This is reflected in what you might call a trade deficit - that is, between any one partner, more money flows from us to them than vice versa

Trump is trying to penalize nations for not buying American products by artificially increasing the cost of foreign products for US consumers - which theoretically makes US products more competitive - and should lead to more US production of goods

The kicker is that this leads to retaliatory tariffs, that is, other nations then slap tariffs on our products and our US goods go back to being expensive and uncompetitive

The reason this will likely not work out well for us is
1. Retaliatory tariffs nullify any benefit our tariffs may have had on our economy and trade deficit
2. We are fighting the whole world instead of one by one, meaning retaliatory tariffs could destroy our exports - while other nations just switch to a slightly more friendly trade partner who isn't the US

Fighting a battle on 2 fronts is a mistake? What about 190+

It’s a slow process, but I’m kinda giving it a chance because if it does work, that being we get make more products in our territory, factories and workers, and countries caving in again. we’ll benefit our future generations in the long run

>Looks at the other times the US tried to tariff the world

Hey man, and you know, maybe next time communism will work too

A lot of ideas sound good in theory, but once you've seen how they fare in execution it's time to accept the results

A lot of the important product categories being tariffs will take years to set up factories. Also the other 2 times that happened there happened to be a depression.

Trump’s a business man, he likes to do business 😝 because like the economy during his first term (before the pandemic ) was actually good

Hey I’m not worried about communism anymore, socialism is the new party I fear that shouldn’t be praised so much

And hey, if it turns out really bad in the next few years, I’ll just switch political parties

There is an old saying, when goods don't cross borders, armies do

An end to inter-reliance of nations will take away deterrent for war
