Time for a new GITHUB... Google has really cracked down on Youtube Downloading Bastards.
There already exist multiple alternatives to GitHub: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_source-code-hosting_facilities
One popular Git-hosting service alternative is GitLab, which I already use for my more interesting software projects (mainly Smash Bros. Ultimate themed mods for a few free/opens-source games). GitLab is not the only alternative (it can even be self-hosted), however.

If you took a moment to read GitHub's policy on DMCA requests, you would realise that they take action upon *receiving* a request that meets the minimum format. They are not taking a side or agreeing that either party is correct. It's taken down while the action is discussed and subsequently resolved, one way or another.

The title of this thread is ridiculous. GitHub has been responding to DMCA requests for as long as it has existed, this event is nothing special. If you want someone to get mad at, go yell at the RIAA for filing the request.

Given all this drama (and Nintendo being the pieces of shit they are), I've been thinking about moving or copying all my romhacking repositories to other services to have backups of them all, but I am not sure which one.
Which ones would you recommend? I heard GitLab is a popular one, but how does it compare to GitHub in terms of usage, commands, etc.?

You could host them on a VPS in a country that doesn't care about the DMCA (apparently the Netherlands is a good one). Or you could just host the patches and nothing else to avoid Ninty's C&Ds.

@Seriel That's very insightful, I understand that is in Github's best interest to just take down first, questions later. RIAA is really making a stretch.

Is there a good Github alternative?

Tell me how protecting you IP from unlicensed ports, homebrew and lets not forget, piracy, makes them assholes? If you were them, would you want people doing this shit that makes you lose money?

I have already mentioned GitLab earlier, which I do use, but there exist other services. If you would like, you could even self-host a GitLab instance of your own (works with other services that allow self-hosting), putting you in 100% control over your Git repositories.

Isn't github now owned by Microsoft or am I mistaken?
Github still is owned by Microsoft since a few years ago; nothing about this ownership has changed recently.
