More on the clone issue...

The Edge IS a CycloDS Evo clone. Specifically, it's a CycloDS Evo BLACK clone. It even shares the Evo Black's main flaw: the protrusion of the microSD.

Both the Edge and the CycloDS Evo Black have the same IC's. The only difference is that the Evo has an extra BGA flash chip to hold the firmware. Both cards also have the same shell.

The problem with Flash carts, is that since they deal with grey areas of the law, there's no IP protection for them either... So Edge could be reverse engineered, could be rip-off, could be stolen code, could even be from the same (Cyclo) team (who might want to produce a mass market, low margin, but high volume product).

A little off topic Q: Did M3 ever acknowledge that the M3 Simply is a R4 clone (Or is it a rebranded R4)?

Actually, I feel that given that out-of-the-blue, every (new) flash cart is just coming out with 100% compatibility and the like, it might just that the underlying code of all these might be similar and lifted right out of the R4... I know cheat codes and some other stuff are not the same, but the main code for running the DS programs might be similar, with every flashcart producer adding or subtracting as they see fit, to differentiate themselves... Just another conspiracy theory....

Competition is GOOD. The companies have to make cheaper and better products. And we reap the rewards.
Clones lead the competition, competition leads to cheaper products, cheaper products lead to more competition, competition leads to more features.

That was quick. Great review! And the Edge is loking very tempting right now... The only thing holding me back is the protruding MicroSD card. But then again, I might just buy now and hope to get one without the problem early March.

And yes, the Edge is a CycloDS knock-off, but not a clone. I wish it was a clone, because the firmware would be interchangeable.

Maybe it is made by the same company as the cyclo. They may have wanted a cheaper product to expand their range of customers. (The CycloDS IS expensive) That would explain the similar OS, perfect compatibility right off the bat, and similar production issues (MicroSD slot)

So that's my theory, it's a stripped down version of the cycloDS made by the same company. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. And it would definitely make the company more money.

Great review, I'd be interested to know about compatibility with HC microSDs and with other quality microSDs as well as support for firmware with better features e.g the updates by the team in future.

The Edge is just running a modified version of the firmware.

It's not from Team Cyclops. They'd be hyping it if it was. My guess is that someone at TC's fab plant leaked the design when they were doing the Evo Black respin. Either that, or the factory that makes the Evo during official business hours puts out their own Edge copies at night.

This looks great. I'll be recommending it to friends as long as they don't want or need some of the Cyclo's features like RTS. Could be worth the discounted price compared to the Evo..

I'd much rather give up skinning than deal with the DSTT's laggy menus.
