I'm hoping to create a resource on the current situation for Gateway owners wanting to play games online. Here's what I understand so far:

.3ds games on the Gateway MicroSD card cannot be used to play online.

Retail carts can play online by booting into Classic Mode.

.cia files can play online in Gateway mode.

There are things I would still like to know, however.
    • Does this imply .3ds games converted to .cia can be played online in Gateway mode? (And can .cia files use .3ds save files?)
    • (To be continued)
    Thanks!

you can also play online by injecting a .3ds file with a header and renaming to .3dz (but you'll lose any saves you had with the .3ds file)

i used this method to play mario kart 7 online

Ah, found that guide thanks. Too bad about the save files. (Unless it's card2?)

What's the general method new Gateway owners use if they want the golden trio of
    1) Transferring their retail carts to a single location
    2) Keeping their old saves
    3) Playing online?
