Hold on a second, It hasnt been confirmed that the lower firmware version theyre expanding the compatibility is 8.x. It could be 7.x for all we know. If you want to buy your kid something he might be actually play before Christmass the sadly I would suggest a Sky3DS. If its not meant for this Christmas and the kid can wait then definitely go with GW, even though they said in an email that support for lower firmware is coming later. So first theyre gonna release the 9.0 - 9.2 the the lower firmware version. Dont take my word but thats what ive read.
It's much more likely they extend compatibility to 8.x, since it's the latest revision packed into cartridge's updates.
But yeah, I don't expect seeing it this christmas.

Best thing to do is don't expect ANYTHING, just wait for the release. If you can't wait then go with what is available.

8.x is where the most significant changes happened, when they added New 3DS support.
Yeah it's speculation but isn't it more likely that the flaw was introduced there, considering Gateway also works on the New 3DS?

i wouldn't get ahead of myself, I would rather wait and see what GW was talking about.

I have neither and don't have my 3ds yet but from what I've read I'd go for gateway and I'm sure they could clone sky3ds if they needed too

If it were a 1 line fix, it would have been DESTROYED along with smea's ninjhax and GW's 9.2 update. I have no idea what "headers" are however, but it seems that the most promising cart is Sky3DS, even if GW has a history of flash updates.

Could someone explain the difference between how Sky3DS and GW emulate 3DS carts? Which one is "better" or "more efficient"?

No one on these forums knows the true answer to that question. Anyone who attempts to answer that is speculating. I doubt anyone has all the source and electrical engineering knowledge, from GW and Sky, to answer that question.

Gateway uses a kernel exploit, so it can have pretty much full control of the 3DS.
Sky3DS only exploits some loophole in the cartridge loading process.

Here are the pro's and cons... not points that are invalid, can be about any card and are not researched

SkY 3DS
+ Plays multiple roms
+ works with all current firmwares
+ Lets you pay online and access eshop when your 3DS firmware is uptodate only
- No rom menu, physical rom selection via hardware button
- Unless you have up-to-date firmware some roms will require you to update to play them
- Cannot have new firmware flashed to it for future hot fixes for when exploit entry points blocked
- Cannot install CIA files, if for patches, you will have to update 3DS firmware to access eshop to grab patches.
- No cross Region for games

Gateway
+ Plays multiple roms
+ Supports EmuNAND for games up to 8.1
+ Access to eshop and online functions via CIA patch installs from devMenu
+ Supports multi region
+ Card can be updated by being flashed to change its ability to enter exploits entry points
- EmuNAND requires the manufacturer to keep creating patches so you can use this function, if possible.
- Currently no emuNAND for 9.4 firmware.
- Currently cannot be used on any 3DS firmware higher then 4.5

The issue isnt pros & cons the issue is: you were disrepectful toward me mon bon monsieur got it!

I've got a 3DS with firmware 7.1.0-16E so I'm guessing either one will work with mine, right..?

But what happens if I buy or play a ROM for a game that has an update on it..? Have people worked out how to strip updates from ROMs yet..? And do all ROMs work with both carts..? If not, is there a compatibility list somewhere..?

Haven't really been keeping in touch with developments so far.

Have just read that quote in the post above mine and it says that the Gateway doesn't work on any firmware above 4.5. So I guess that I should go with the Sky3DS then considering that I'm on 7..?

They haven't confirm which firmware rev. so what you said is pure speculation.

Thats where your wrong, they flat out said it, heres a cut and paste

in your defense though, they said it the same day you said they didnt.

GATEWAY PUBLIC RELEASE 2.7

Posted on December 15, 2014
Today we present another quick update for our 4.5 users: Gateway OMEGA 2.7 which brings support for emunand 9.4!
We also want to inform our users that we are still working on native support for sysnand 9.0 – 9.2, so please be patient until we are ready to release!
We try to deliver a smooth experience for our users and this takes time to perfect!

We also inform our users that they MUST NOT UPDATE SYSNAND TO 9.3 OR ABOVE, because we will not be able to support entry to those sysnand versions any time soon.
If you are wondering what native support we will bring for lower than sysnand 9.0, we can tell that after 9.0-9.2 we will start with 8.0-8.1 and gradually work our way down with support for even lower sysnand firmware versions.
