Hacking Gateway and Saves Question

I recently ordered a Gateway and am concerned about my saves... My 3DS is currently on FW 9.2.0-20U and heard that if I downgrade through the Gateway, I won't be able to use my Retail cart saves anymore. Is it worth downgrading? What all can I do with Gateway? Sorry, am new to all this. Thoughts appreciated

Has anyone been able to use 4.x key saves and 6.x saves on EmuNAND from Retail carts?
