Hacking Gateway 3ds- regions and multiplayer

Ok so I'll make this quick and to the point.
Me and my brother both have PAL 3ds consoles bought in Australia. I have been using the US version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on my gateway. My question is this... If my brother bought a PAl copy of the game would we be able to do local multiplayer coop ( between the different region games?)
I'm hoping this will work cause we have the same region 3ds console...
I know download play dosent work across different region 3ds's but does local wifi play??

PAL region = EUR
Just get backup his EUR version when he buys it.
I'm don't think you will be able to use your USA region gateway save with the EUR version tho

Yeah, from what I've read so far, it seems that the most important to have same region roms. Not sure if the region of the console makes a difference though.
