Gaming Gateway 3ds backup cartridge and save corrupted

Is it possible to backup games/saves from 3ds carts and play them on the gateway when it's been played on a firmware greater than 6.0.0?
I followed this guide and got a corrupted save error.

you can't for card 1 games. you need to start with a new savegame.

It's paper mario. I found out that gateway classic mode lets you play retail game carts that don't use the 6.x encryption, so I can play it now
