If a game doesn't have gamepad support then analog won't be used in-game, it'll be treated as digital.

Like your character won't walk if you tilt the stick just a bit and run if you tilt it more by default.
Ah that kinda makes sense. For the games I intend to play using the adapter+PS2, I don't think that will be an issue.

I hate to start an argument, but i'm not impressed by the Xbox 360 controller. It's a good controller, but i don't find it any better than any other one out there. It's a good deal more expensive than many as well.

I use the Logitech Dual Action gamepad. Comes in some other varieties such as cordless and rumble as well. I have the original standard one. Replicates the PS1/PS2/PS3 controllers roughly, it has all their buttons (even the R3 clicky analog sticks). Very comfortable and sturdy. It's quite cheap too, you can find it for around $20 most places. It's perfect for everything i use.

There are a few games that don't work without a real 360 controller (Eidos does this for some dick reason). You can just get an xbox 360 controller emulator though and put some dll files in the game directory. It will force even stubborn PC games like mini ninjas to work with your gamepad.

As for games that don't have native gamepad support, use xpadder. You can create custom profiles for games to map keystrokes and even mouse gestures to gamepad buttons or analog. I have one game that won't work with gamepads- Beyond Good and Evil. Managed to use xpadder to map all functions to my gamepad, works great! It is correct that if a game doesn't support analog, it will treat everything as digital. However, it can still feel better than using the keyboard regardless.

i love the 360 gamepad because my hands are too big for the ps3 one

it deff needs a real d-pad, though

Define "real" d-pad. Last I checked, both PS3 and X360 controllers have 2 analogue sticks, a d-pad, 4 thumb buttons and 4 shoulder buttons. The only difference is how they're orientated.
The quality of the Xbox (360) D-pad is extremely low. It lacks precision, making platforms completely unplayable. It's really only suitable for selecting something in a menu or as a replacement for a button.

Other than that, the Xbox 360 controller is probably the best choice you can make.

As opposed to an imaginary d-pad?

How many pounds per square inch of force defines a "real D-pad?" it's +-shaped dude.
it would seem you haven't used a 360 much, scrub :3

The only reason you'd need a d-pad is if you were playing a fighting game. For anything else, it's not necessary. The 360 controller is easily the best option. There really no fuss with it and a lot of games have native support for it. With almost anything else, you're guaranteed to be jumping through hoops to get it working properly.

It depends. I despise playing 2D platformers with analog - try beating Mega Man 10 with the CC stick.

this

its just a piece of plastic pivoting on an axis pin
where as a real d-pad has a sensor for ever part of it, works much better
