Just about everything has an emulator and can play games for free so why would anyone want to buy a device then buy the games you can already play in an emulator on the device you already have for free?
If you're talking the PSP and DS, emulation on them is limited (mainly an issue with the DS, the PSP has a wide range of stuff).

As for android devices like phones and tablets, you can't beat physical controls (especially in the standard gamepad layout).

  • Display: 3.5” LCD
  • Screen Resolution: 320 x 240 pixels resolution (16 BIT colour)

NOPE.
This.
Why would any developer want to develop for that silly screen / resolution / colous if you could also make something for a nice retina or amoled screen?

Although you can use Bluetooth on these devices to usually hook up a game remote (like PS3 or Wiimote I thought) and there's your Xperia Plays out there that have button controls on them.

Interesting... This could potentially be powerful enough to emulate PSX games. The specs say nothing about a hardware accelerated GPU, but if it does have that, it could possibly emulate some N64 games fullspeed as well. Resolution is a bit of a barrier though since a lot of PSX and N64 games will have bad-looking HUD and 2D elements at that resolution.

I have a pre order on the GCW. About the same price and way more powerful. This might be cool if they concentrated on really old machines to emulate and did them well. Most of the time they just overreach and make shitty emulators though

In theory it's a nice idea for people who like retro stuff, but a quick run on Google looks like this company have completely messed it up. The reviews for this thing are terrible, the download store's still in beta and has very few games on it, the console's price has recently been slashed by £40 (they were charging £100, bear in mind you can get a 3DS for £125 now.). It looks like they've launched the console far too early and the support just isn't ready. Plus I've never heard of it before, if they don't advertise it it's not going to do well. Any handheld going up against smartphones is going to struggle, especially one that only appeals to the niche market of people who like playing old games.

I'll be honest, it looks like this ship has already sunk.

[Edit] Okay, done a bit more reading and looks I've got a few things wrong here. It looks like their business model is to launch the console, show that it can sell, then approach the developers to get them on board launching games on the system having shown that there is a demand for this older stuff. I wonder how many of the console's early adopters knew that? Technically it is a gamble, if noone signs up they're screwed. But it also means my previous statement saying the console looks like it's tanking is incorrect, it's only been out for 2 months and they're just doing things backwards so it's hard to tell.

And the iControlpad... why does everyone forget the best smartphone gaming add-on in existence whenever talking about this? :glare:

Also, the gamegripper guy designs special covers for many Androids with slideout keyboards to simulate real buttons quite effectively in most cases (only thing missing is the shoulder buttons, which you can use the physical camera buttons, etc for in a lot of cases)

I think I'm better off with a Dingoo or a PSP

I don't see how this will be successful any time soon. Maybe after custom firmware comes out or something.

The PSP is probably more powerful than this device and it can do tons of emulation perfectly and can be had used on the cheap. Also the market is satuarated with many much more powerful JXD and Yinlips handhelds for around the cost of this system. The cat is out of the bag on many of the retro systems. This device has DRM and I cannot see many people wanting to be tied to the whims of some company when there are tons of other options. I wish them luck with it but I'm with the people who cannot see this system being successful.
