With Smashbros for the 3DS coming soon, I started thinking about how awkward it would be to play without a controller. I was wondering if there would be any way for me to hook up my Gamecube controller (or I guess any controller) to the system. Is there any adapter I can buy for such a thing?

A controller to 3DS? I don't think there is a port capable of that on the 3DS. I wouldn't worry about it though the 3DS should be more than enough to run the game comfortably with good controls.

As a Smashbros player for 10+ years I just can't see myself enjoying the layout very much. I also wouldn't want to go half as hard on my 3DS as I do on my Gamecube controller. What about something like this?

Have you tried holding a 2DS? I'm also a smash bros player of 10+ years and recently got a 2DS and feel like it feels closest to the gamecube controller between all 3 iterations of the current gen DS that are out. Just my 2 cents anyway... it's feels like it's something that won't wobble or break with intensive use.

I honestly don't get any of the points you're making. They're developing a Smash Bros. version specifically for the 3DS. Why would you expect the controls to be bad?

I never said the controls would be bad, I said that they would be awkward for me personally because I enjoy using a controller. I'm trying to find a way to enjoy the game in a way that best fits me (and possibly other people that would enjoy a controller) . In the video I linked I noticed that someone moded the 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro to work with a PS1 controller. Is there anything like that for sale somewhere?

Nope, he/she didn't mod the Circle Pad Pro, he/she modded the 3DS as can be see in the video below. AFAIK there's no way to achieve this without a hardware mod.
(Using GameCube/old(er) controllers is a lot easier on the WiiU though, just use Bruno Freitas' adapter or a similar product)

Ah, how unfortunate. As much as I'd like to use an actual controller, maybe I'll just buy a Circle Pad Pro and stick with that. There don't seem to be many alternatives.

Instead of playing a watered down version of Smash Bros. just go with the Wii U and that has officially support for the GameCube controller with its own adapter and newly produced NGC controllers.

Stupidly the Circle Pad Pro is not supported by Super Smash Bros. 3DS

They're making that feature exclusive to the new upcoming Super 3DS.

Want to play Super Smash Bros. on 3DS at its finest? Get yourself the Super 3DS! Not only do you have one thumbpad but two and also access to posting screenshots on Miiverse!

i get why you need the second circle pad for mh but its just kiddy wheels for smash bros
