Hacking GameCube Backup Disc Problems

Hi,

I bought some Sony Mini DVD-R's from a department store near me, and I've been having some small issues with them.
I imaged a backup game to one using ImgBurn, and the game runs awesome, but randomly it will seem to have trouble loading from the disc and give me a Disc Read Error. The disc was burned at 2x, the minimum the drive/disc is compatible with. I have no problem while playing the retail version of the game.

Am I doing something wrong? I tried both GC Backup Launcher from WiiGator and Neogamma. Should I just purchase a GameCube to run the mini discs?

Never tried mini DVDs but I would assume they'd work. Just use a regular DVD (and you could even put multiple games on one DVD if you wanted to).

If you were to purchase a used GC to use mini DVDs, you'd also need a modchip AFAIK which you definitely don't need on the Wii (softmod).

Is there an application on the Wii for the Homebrew Channel to test reading discs? Or should I just try a CleanRip dump.

Test reading discs app... I don't know.
CleanRip a burned game... not sure why.

Have you tried cleaning your system's lens?

Why not just use DVD-R 4.7GB? They will work fine (and are much cheaper), as long as you expand the GameCube ISO to 3GB, using: Wiped GCM Fixer GUI

Could be the PC disc drive you're using to burn the discs. I have a nice (well, used to be nice) Plextor in my desktop that was flawless for years, but when I tried burning GCN iso's on mini-dvdr's this summer, I got coasters. Even when I had Imgburn check the burn for errors, it reported the disc as good but it would fail in actual use. I did a mobile install of Imgburn on a usb thumbdrive and burned the discs on my work laptop instead. The disc drive in that laptop is just a generic POS, but it had basically never been used. I've done about 80 mini-dvdr burns on it now, and all have worked flawlessly. This was all done for use on a Gamecube w/ xenogc installed.

tbgtbg I actually haven't yet but that would be a good idea. My dvd drive was replaced last about 6 years ago now that I think about it.

RadioShadow We actually ended up getting a GameCube off of Craigslist, so we will most likely buy a XenoGC modchip and use the mini discs and hope for the best. (Since using the larger discs would mean removing some of the inside.)

Hanafuda Ah, which mini discs did you purchase? Could it be the make of the discs that causes that? (I remember sometimes reading that the Wii was picky with discs or something.)

Phillips generic. They work great, in my Wii (softmod) and my Gamecube (xenogc). In fact, after I finished off my first spindle of those, I ordered another. They work.

I am 100% sure that using a different drive to burn the discs solved my problem. YMMV. My burns, so long as I do it with the laptop and not the Plextor in my desktop PC, work in my Wii (softmod) and Gamecube (xenogc) equally well.

Thanks Hanafuda! I will have to try out a different drive, however it may be a slightly higher burn rate. Would that slow them down too much?

Higher burn rate, maybe ok, maybe not. You won't know until you do it. If you're using IMGBURN and a good (not worn out like my Plextor) drive, it'll probably be fine.
