how can I get the start select buttons working and is it safe to submerge in vinegar?

I also use this stuff to clean the microswitches on GBA-SP/DS/3DS shoulder buttons when they start fritzing.

Make sure you buy the regular cleaner spray, not the stuff that says, "with lubricant." The lubricated stuff has a light machine oil mixed in with the cleaner, intended for moving parts, not PCB's.
