Is it normal for ftp, or wifi install with tinfoil, to be really slow? It takes all night to install a large game with tinfoil.

There are numbers (transfer speeds) shown to users in every step you describe. Is there a reason you chose not to mention them - at all?

The let me assume you had given that info and it was "normal" response is, that the switch over wifi caps out at 4 MB/s. You can do the math on your own.

Via usb transfer, the switch caps out at roughly 20 MB/s (might depend on your SD card). you can do the math on that as well.

If you cant, google does it for you. Wolfroam alpa does it for you and a myriad of free oniline conversion tools do it for you as well.

Thats why there is numbers in the first place.

If you get slower wifi speeds, its because of the switches wifi connectivity. To put it plainly - it sucks.

Well... Lets say he/she has a crappy wifi connection which can throttle transfer speeds down to 1.4 MB/s on the switch, no problem -

then all of a sudden a 40GB game does take 8 hours to install.

Same game over a 20MB/s usb connection takes half an hour to transfer.

edit: LA Noir might be the biggest game at the moment at 29 GB though.. ;) (Six hours at 1.4 MB/s)

Ah sorry I can be a bit dumb sometimes.....just FTP a small file and it seems the speed averaged about 1mb.

As for tinfoil it seems to be, from memory, about 1gb per hour.

1gb per hour == 300kByte/s which is far too slow for network speeds.

Less than a third of what you seemingly describe in the first line.

I get 1.4 MB/s average on FTP on a less than ideal connection, and that moves up to 4MB/s the closer I move my switch to my router.. ;)

USB install at 20 MB/s is the way to go though. ;)

Thats 66 times faster than the 300 kB/s you've indicated.

All math done in less than 30 seconds with the help of google and online calculators. On my own. Just saying.. ;)

Well I did say it was from memory.

I cant use usb install so im using ftp/wifi or whatever it is that tinfoil does.

The 1mb (started at 1.2 and dropped to 800) thing I said was from Filezilla.

So everything seems fairly normal?

Im afraid of getting burnin on the screen from leaving the switch on that long....

FTP/network install is painfully slow. Just use USB install (I know you said you can't, but I suggest trying to figure it out).

Believe me I have tried to get usb install to work but Ive never been able to get my pc to detect my switch.

Thanks for the help.

Edit: Do I have to have USB3 on my pc for usb install to work?

Edit2: I have been trying to get it to work since your last reply....no luck.

So i made a new topic here https://gbatemp.net/threads/pls-help-with-usb-install.535696/

Try using Goldleaf and Goldtree https://github.com/XorTroll/Goldleaf/releases
You also need the libusbK drivers for usb install to work, iirc you need to use "Zadig"
EDIT in case you need it:
  • Download Zadig
  • With your Switch plugged in to your PC open tinfoil on the switch
  • Open Zadig > Options > List All Devices.
  • In the scroll box above the button "Install Driver", tap the arrow until arriving at "libusbK".
  • Click "Install Driver"

I have pretty good internet with stable wifi. I only managed to get 7MBps on switch while my laptop can hit 100MBps (both device at 5ghz wifi)
But for the convenient of having my switch docked and allow me to install my games its worth it IMO
Any body tried with ethernet adapter?

I have tried that multiple times and it still just lists my switch as apx in zidag. and goldtree just crashes.
