OMG  I've been waiting for something like this for so long! My Wii's disc drive is practically ready for retirement
Thank you so much for this~!

This is great stuff! Mods are finally more accessible. Really didn't like having to patch ROMs for every single mod and blow up the storage with all that unnecessary data.

No longer do I need to have a physical copy at all times which go for lots of money or follow a tacky workaround by constructing a custom ISO for the purpose of using CTGP Revolution. This sounds excellent, I should try it out sometime. :grog:
Don't think so... At least not the latest mainline releases. CTGP-R has its own launcher nowadays and uses the disc requirement as an anti-cheat/DRM measure. If someone were to bypass that (it wouldn't be trivial, AFAIK the launcher isn't open source), it would probably be a game of whack-a-mole with mandatory updates.

Thanks, DRM! We always loved you.

You can play it without a disc using a modded .wbfs, so I'm sure if sylv did this through friiloader it'd work, the problems start to show when you begin to try and play online.

But regardless, you're gonna be hindered in someway without an actual disc unfortunately.

I respect the work of those two brit brothers who are behind CTGP-R but I really really don't like their commitment to this bullshit antipiracy well long after Nintendo themselves stopped selling Mario Kart Wii and have no plans even to rerelease it - like what is the point of this antipiracy now?

All I can say is, I understand their need to implement it and why they're committed to it, but like everyone else; I feel like it does alienate those who legitimately obtained their rom.

But even so, there were other projects such as devolution that had similar practices, despite this, I guess there isn't much point in dwelling on it

As CTGP-R's player base is pretty small now (at least from what i can tell), and devolution really only serves niche uses such as playing adventure mode in pokemon box, and nintendont makes it pretty much obsolete for anything else.

As stated earlier, it was done to combat cheaters. Whether it was any more effective than manual bans, I can't say. Really frustrating either way.

Damn, that's unfortunate. So how do these measures affect a backup copy? Is it online-only? Still, I dislike their usage of DRM for a game that's long since no longer available for sale. I understand that cheating may be a big concern, but given how much MKW goes for on eBay and other places, preservation should be a very important topic in the event that these games become unobtainium.

It might be possible to use just the Riivolution files bundled in the package for single-player, I haven't tried. I know that people like to use older versions of CTGP-R or mods based on it since they didn't have this requirement at all.

I don't think there's "online DRM" per se, only that the launcher is non-functional without a disc. I didn't go too in-depth when it comes to this (I didn't even get to try the mod), but I'm confident that's about all there is to it.

I'm honestly surprised it took this long. I thought there might have been some technical limitation preventing it, like IOS-based mass storage mounting being resource-intensive compared to the optical drive. But it was just anti-preservationists being funny about stuff.

As an aside, that Git fork is as Safe Edgy as it gets. Not an Al Zutt joke in sight.

EDIT: Also seems to not work with vWii. I reinstalled IOS58 and checked the .xml and everything.

Tueidj would be so pissed. I wish I could see his reaction to this. Great job! I look forward to seeing more mods released for Wii games thanks to this new amazing tool.

I think it's a bullshit excuse to hide their anti-preservationist beliefs about backups and I wish more people would call them on it. It is possible to verify the integrity of backups. They're not fooling anyone but the most tech illiterate gamers.
