Homebrew FriendMii [WIP]

The main focus of this app is to bring a replacement friends app, possibly with more features later on.

Features:

• Displays friend list. (Use L/R to switch between your friend card and friends list)
• Add/remove friends from your friends list.
• Search for friends by their name. (Perhaps more filters later )
• Displays friend current playing/favourite title ID, titleID. (Yeah I know doesn't look very nice but it works)
• Displays friend's comment as well as their friend code.
• Displays owner's friend code, favourite game, comment etc, online status, hide status etc.

I'd appreciate if someone can test this for me, and make sure their information is accurate.

The information I'm looking for accuracy are as follows:

- Friend code
- Favourite game
- Name/comment.

Issues I'm aware of:

- Names/comments with special characters won't show up properly.
- If your favourite game is an system title, it won't be displayed.

After Themely's developer started talking about skimming user seeds and other info and then suspiciously making Themely closed source, I'm very skeptical about closed source 3DS homebrew. Especially homebrew that handles friend codes and online information.

Also I'm guessing you're using a system title since it's not showing up?

Cool app! Much nicer looking than the default menu. But I'm a bit confused. In the OP you said it was closed source but the long name of the app on the home menu is "Open source friends app."

It works fine except my name contains special characters so it doesn't show the last letter. I can't post screenshots right now as i'm on mobile.

Maybe it's close sourced because it's a WIP and the dev's comfortable with that? I'm curious if this can go over the 100 friend limit? Now that unbricking without a hardmod is a reality, my next pipe dream is breaking that limit.

Fair enough though I'm not comfortable installing closed source brew. Once the source is there and I can compile it I'll go ahead and do so.

I'm guessing you're converting to utf8 before displaying the name and you probably aren't allocating a large enough buffer for the output (or just aren't putting in a large enough len in the utf conversion methods) - special characters take up more than 1 code point, so you may need to put something larger than the number of characters

Out of full politeness, I'm going to ask: why is it closed source? If it's to protect the servers' IP from being exposed on accident, why not release the source with the IP edited out?

The community already has a natural distrust for closed source Homebrew, and Recent Community Events involving closed source Homebrew really makes it hard for me to know whether it is safe to install or not.

Not trying to pull anyone's leg here or even call your thing shit (in fact I think it looks quite impressive), but an explanation on why it is closed source would be very useful.

I was waiting for someone to figure this out haha. I was just playing around and was to curios to see how the community would react to another closed source homebrew. Well for one, you guys sure do seem careful as to what goes in to your 3DS after the whole unbanmii fiasco. But yeah, it's good that you're more careful about installing something regardless of who the developer is, but at the same time I'm not happy with it. Some developers (who are actually really good devs) tend to make their programs closed source like CEMU for example. Please don't view closed source as a bad thing just because one guy here messed around with it. That said, I always planned to release the source from the start, this was just something I was curious about.

Oh right, seems like I might be missing something then. Can you try changing your favourite game to some other game (just for testing) and report back if it still has the same issue? Also the latest release should display your name properly now.

First of all this is useless as long as you keep it closed source. As at that point it's literally just a worse version of an already existing app. Really there is only multiple ways this could have been useful. Luckily for you you failed at all of them!

The first one is easiest, it being open source would help other devs interface with the FRD:u/n/a service. However because this thing is closed source, it fails at this (BADLY!)

The second is as an actual improvement to the original Friends App. Of course it fails at this. Not only is it less pleasant to look at. At this point it not only doesn't add anything new, it doesn't even do all the things the original did. Meaning there is literally NO reason for anyone to use this until it does.

No but seriously maybe the one that should get a mirror and look at it is you.

Now that might have been a bit harsh but I could see literally no reason for you to keep it closed source. Simply because unless your doing something shady, which I hope you aren't, there is no reason to do this. The only other thing I could think of is that you are for whatever reason ashamed of your current code and want to clean it up first. Which if that is the case is fair enough, but maybe do that BEFORE releasing it... even in WIP status.


Ps. Why are you still using PhotoShop CC 2015? Why not update to 2017?

Edit: went away after writing most of this. Now all problems I had have been fixed.
