There definitely is an algorithm of some sort. Back when I got cheap wii points, through the pepsi rockband promotion, (no longer active), I did notice a pattern in the points issued.

That pattern is that the first 8 digits are consecutive.

Code:
27274678 42257057
27274679 08578946
27274680 78681103
27274681 62962404
27274682 08625152
27274683 19823498

(Note, none of these codes work anymore. I spent them already. :) )

The last 8, then are somehow generated, in some way, to be specific to the first 8.

if nintendo was smart (which they don't seem to be) they would have an activation of sorts, so this would NEVER be able to happen. if the code is not sent to nintendo for validation before its spent, it would be invalid. like prepaid cell phone cards.

That is so very true. Other than security cameras, EAS alarm systems, and the risk of a criminal record, (in other words, a possible lack of balls), nothing else stops a person from walking into a walmart, or a game stop, or future shop, or best buy, or any other retailer, pulling a few wii point cards, and walking out, and actually use these cards. Unlike most other cards, these cards don't appear in any way, shape or form, to require any activation at the cash register first.
