Free Video Format Converter?

Hello, I have been out of the loop to DVD's for a LONG time. Last thing I used was DVD Decrypter and Clone DVD. I guess my question in reality is 2 questions:

1) Free modern app to make an ISO of a DVD.

2) Free modern app to convert video formats (DVD to AVI ISO to AVI...)

Please provide links, too many BS sites out there. My goal is to convert my DVD's to ISO's and to convert my DVD's to AVI's. Using Magic ISO to mount phantom drives is OK, but limited number can be used.

burnaware gets blocked by Avira antivirus as it detects a virus during setup.

video lan requires you have an IQ higher than a rock.. I failed that check, lol I'm just a noob at converting DVD's and ISO's to avi's.

I think the icecream media converter should be able to convert iso to about every format.

Ew, sorry, I didn't mean to link you to a virus! VLC is good at what it does, but I will agree that it's a bit convoluted
