In short do not buy anything with R4 in the name unless you know better, this has been true since late 2008 :)

The popular class but very good compatibility flashcards of the 2010s (accurate clone of original R4, and r4ids.cn) are now hard to find, leaving second class products (miscellaneous decent flashcards like Ace3DS and TTDS that support YSMenu) or theoretically better, but outdated and not very reliable other cards (like the DSOne, again YSMenu is an option for that)

I think there's a recent "interesting flashcards on sale now" topic but can't find it now :)

The Acekard-compatible ones are my favorite, as they can run WOODR4.

so what can i do? for what should i search?
I've owned a R4i-sdhc and never had problems with it.
I don't know what most guys are referring to with "you don't know better".

Also, my very first Flashcard was a TTDS in 2010 and also never had any problem with it.

Unfortunately nowadays, I don't think most "good" flashcard manufacturers exists, that is Acekard, Cyclo Evolution, DSTT, Ez Flash, M3, SuperCard... and if you do find one, chances are they're clones of R4.

Take a look at their official websites and choose whichever is still getting support/updates and try to buy from their own on-line stores.

I can't recommend TTDS enough, it's been my favourite thus far. Must be Nostalgia?

Most cards can run: https://gbatemp.net/threads/ds-i-3d...-ds-i-games-and-ds-i-menu-replacement.472200/
and you might not need R4 at all today to get the same result with twillight menu.
the cards are about all based on either R4 or TTDS.
the clone cards killed the marked, then the time bombs killed the rest.

But many people are still using DS/Lites, I for example I'm using a "GameBoy Macro".

But let's not deviate the topic, OP hasn't mentioned which console he/she has.

I'm assuming it's a DS and I'm just replying with that in mind.

Edit: I just read OP has a DSi.

You can use twillightmenu on any compitable R4 card and a DS (lite).
twillight menu adds loads of anti DRM, emulators and functions.
For DS there is no bad card, only timebomb cards, R4 never really developped boyond that one function on DS (lite).

Basically, I have a DSlite, a DSi, and a NEW3dsXL

I thought of giving the Lite or DSI to my nephew to introduce himself to a gaming device. But I don't have any old games, so my idea was to buy a flash card and dump some games on it. I think that's safer because they can't mess up with cfw or something on the device. In the worst case, I'll dump the files back on the card, and all will be good.
So for that, I need a flashcard. The old gold one I have in the picture can play the most games, but sometimes there is a errorcode=04. I know it's because of the not-up to date kernel, I think. And because I can't find a later update, I'm thinking of buying a new card.

For myself, I was thinking about giving my new3ds a cfw, so I could maintain it myself.
But I am holding myself back because I am not so much into this kind of stuff ^^

But twilightmenu lacks some flashcart-specific functions that the original menus support. It's not as simple as recommending twilightmenu for everything.
And ofc most cards will work fine for most things, but there are still better and worse cards. I usually recommend the DSONE for DS/Lite because that has good game compatibility, features like RTS (Real Time Save, similar to savestates in emulators) and ingame guide and the menu is pretty fast. Other menus (including twilightmenu) are pretty slow.

Sadly, there is not the "one good" flashcart for DSi. The ones that work with DSi if it doesn't have a CFW are ace3ds clones and r4i-sdhc.com (and clones).
For ace3ds, it's not sure if they actually work with the latest firmware and Pokemon Black/White 2 don't work properly with the card. Also, ace3ds doesn't have features like RTS or ingame guide. Make sure to get an ace3ds x if you go the ace3ds route because that one works with the latest DSi firmware for sure.
r4i-sdhc.com has good compatibility and features like RTS but the menu is slow and it has a timebomb. You can switch to ysmenu but then you loose the RTS option.

it does lack support of the ones with a core on it, meaning there is a processor for emulation.
so indead DSone and DStwo card mainly and clones have real good extra options, and if RTS needs to be perfect, twillight menu might not have this 100% perfect implanted.
That said, for the R4(i), acekard one and acekard R2(i) lack updates which twillight menu can still offer, it however is a tiny bit slower than the original menu.
It's not perfect you're right, but it may deliver just a solution good enough to not need another card at all.
Development is still active, what can't be said of most original menu's.

Compatibility is not really a reason for twilightmenu when running on a R4 card because twilight uses the original loaders for the cards (or B4DS but that one has severe speed issues... at least that was the case when I tested it). Also, updates are not really necessary in many cases because the last DS games were released about a decade ago. There were no new games that would need new patches to work.

Last 2 pokemon games are, and a lot of cards can't play those.
