AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GOD DAMN IT!!!!

I've blocked the two easy to get to sensors (the ones I don't need to open the PS2 to block) but I can't get to the third one because the screws are so ludicrously tight they won't move. At all. And then the internet died for about the last half hour for the entire street (problem with the big green box we all go through) and as such my downloads stopped and cancelled. Thanks for that.

Suggestions?
Woah, wait. You don't have to unscrew anything except the screws on the bottom of the PS2 to take the top off.

Those are the screws I meant. The six screws on the bottom of the PS2 that were covered with those little squares. I've got one of them off but the others are outright refusing to budge.

Oh yeah, those are tough. You have to place the PS2 on a surface and really force the screwdriver with both a downward and turning force.

Everything seems to have worked out OK. FMCB is now installed. So, from here I just patch games with the ESR Patcher program, burn them to disk, put disk in system, run ESR Loader and play like any normal game, yes?

And of course two final questions for the sake of being the completionist that I am.

1) How do I play games from a USB source, such as a keystick or my MP4 player, or the huge external hard drive I plan on acquiring in a few days?

2) If I was for example to burn the 4 disks of FF9 to one DVD, will they all play? Or do they still need to be on seperate disks?

Actually just the one more. How does J-Downloader work?

Download USB Advance

You can't play PSX games on ESR, DVD or otherwise. Download Cogswap or use the Swap Trick and you must put them on individual CD-R disks.

Understood. Cheers.

Everything has worked out. Just checked my freshly burned copy of Ape Escape 2 and it seems to work perfectly. No slowdown, no glitches, no nothing. Job well done, says I. I could spend the rest of the night stealing new games and burning them all to my newly acquired DVDs but Heather's home now. Games aren't the dominating part of my life they once were, they're just used to fill the gaps between the times when she's here. Now she's here I have much better entertainment

Will do next time I'm on a download run. I've got Tales of Legendia, Ape Escape 2 and Harvest Moon Wonderful Life Special Edition to keep me amused when Heather's at work next. Trying not to go download mental like I did when I hacked my PSP.

Abyss is better than Legendia. Try Valkyrie Profile Silmeria, Radiata Stories and Star Ocean 3 Til the End of Time too

With the PS2's amazing library, that's impossible.

Also, if you feel like playing a game so bad you'll lose thousands of brain cells, get Eureka Seven. That game is AWFUL.

Waiting for the 3DS rerelease of Abyss. Played Valkyrie Profile already, got stuck and never finished it. I thought Star Ocean 3 kinda sucked, TBH. Couln't get on with it at all. I went in expecting a grand sweeping adventure across multiple worlds and all I got was stuck in the middle ages for 30+ hours. I gave up after a while, it was dragging. Felt like a chore.

If I want to play a game that will kill off my brain cells, I'll play Drink-Along-Sonic-2006. You have to play Sonic 2006 and take a shot of Jack Daniels every time you glitch out, see a loading screen, or something stupid happens. I've only ever played that game once, I got about ten minutes in and had to have my stomach pumped.

1) If you installed the noobie package, you should already have open ps2 loader, wich is more recent than usb advance.
also open ps2 loader takes iso directly without using some piece of software like usb advance for games smaller than 4gb.

a) make sure your usb drive is formatted in fat32

b)
IF your game is bigger than 4gb THEN
- you will have to use the usb advance software (or usb extreme gui) to install your game on your usb key
IF your game is smaller than 4gb THEN
- create a CD and a DVD folder on the root of the usb key (case sensitive)
- name your iso like this: SCES_507.60.ICO.iso (32 char. limit)

The "iso number" can be extracted from the iso, just open your iso with your fav. iso editing software and look for a file on the root of the iso that looks like AAAA_###.##
---- if you want to rename a bunch of iso at same time, look for iso2opl.exe.

2) you need either cogswap.elf or psxlauncher.elf and an original ps1 disc (preferably one that takes the whole disc (±650 mb) also called a "high TOC" in the ps2 scene)
here is a psxlauncher tutorial: http://versatile1.wordpress.com/2009/12/26...2-v9-and-above/

about multi-disc ps1, as machomu said, they all have to be burnt on individual cd-r.

Also, if you are planning to buy an external hdd for your ps2, buy one with a ethernet (network) interface since transfer speeds are much better trough the ethernet port than trough the usb port of the ps2.

So to play smaller PS2 games, below 4GB (which seems to be most of them) then I add them to a folder marked DVD on the root of whatever USB device I use, check the ISO number with Apache and rename the file accordingly, the open it with Open PS2 Loader from my menu? Sounds easy. I've been told that the list of games that plays properly via USB is considerably shorter. Is this true, and if so is there a list of what works kicking around anywhere?

Cheers muchly. One final question then. I have a copy of Aggressive Inline for PS2 which for reasons utterly beyond me doesn't load. The disk isn't in bad condition, it just doesn't load. If I were to rip the ISO off that disk and burn it to a fresh one, would it work?

Also, what is SMB? To me that only stands for Super Mario Bros.

SMB is a Windows file sharing protocol (Server Message Block) that can be used to share a directory of files to other devices. In this case, your PS2 with your ISOs.. It just requires an ethernet cable (or crossover if you've have no router).

So I connect my netbook to my PS2 via ethernet cable and it works like a big USB Keystick or something? Would save me having to delete a tonne of stuff off my MP4 player.
