i almost thought of doing this but i will get annoyed like others might opening my pc just to play wii. also i don't really have the memory to hold a lot wii games and it wastes extra electricity by opening a computer just to play wii.

If i had the money, I'd make myself an internal "Wii drive" by hooking up Flatmii to an internal usb header. Then I would find a way of hooking the Wii up to my pci capture card internally (maybe with some solder magic).

However, the one problem is that there are few/no capture devices that will do component 480p, so you would have rely on a composite/s-video (though i suppose in the pal regions you might be able to get RGB) connection. There is also the option of having Wii outputs separate, avoiding the need for a capture card, but requiring two separate outputs in order to get usb streaming working.

Another problem would be getting the wii to fit in a standard 5.25" drive bay, as the Wii is 6.something inches wide. You could get one of those mini-itx motherboards, and then just make your own case to create some sort of mini hybrid wii/pc set up. Then get yourself an inexpensive blue tooth adapter, and connect your wiimote to that for complete wiimote control.

Additionally, I believe that the Wii runs on 12 volts, which makes it almost perfect for running off a PC's internal power supply. According to Wikipedia, the Wii only uses 18 watts max, so it shouldn't even be a problem for the power supply. However, running a Wii off of a PC's internal power supply would make it so that you would always need to have the PC on in order to play the Wii, but that isn't too much of a big deal.

Ah, if only I had the money.

Hmm... alright, I've got two questions for people who already have one of these, or who are more knowledgeable about them.

My laptop's hard drive isn't all that big, but I assume that this would work fine if I had an external hard drive plugged in to it, or could transferring data from the external hard drive, to the comp, and then to the Wii be problematic?

And also, would it work with an external hard drive plugged directly into the Wii?

1. Read my review. Tranferring an ISO from an external hard drive plugged into the computer works fine.
2. No, you need the FlatMii software running on the PC to operate it.

Ive had 1 since it came out any 1 have a problem where the disk skips. it ejects and reinsterts it self. not really a problem but when it happens on wifi i get disconnected. its really bad for rock band 2

Does it work when no disc is inserted? Did you report this to the flatmii team?

This question may have been answered before but there are pages and pages to look through...

I know you can't hook up an external HDD directly to the FlatMii to stream images, but can you use it as a normal modchip and load images off the DVD drive?

I have an older Cyclowiz in my wii which has outdated firmware on it so i cant play newer games and i would love to take it out and replace it with this device and use it as a normal modchip and then just hook it up to my PC to update as needed.

I haven't updated my Cyclowiz cause i have to resolder the update switch and i'm afraid of it getting bricked.

No.

sorry i read over the review again and the answer to my question was right there on top...

So, since im so out of touch with the Wii scene, what is the best modchip out there at the moment?

Something i don't have to keep a switch wire connected to hanging outside the case to update it would be nice...

Answering questions, I some have been answered but OK.

1) The flatmii is a drive emulator that uses your PC as the backend. It still however allows drives to be connected and used.

2) Concerning newer games. The two main errors are the 001 error and the much newer 002 error. Both have relatively simple fixes available but these require a homebrew capable wii that can use fakesigned code (gbatemp is host to many guides on the subject).

3) 90% of switches including the one on the cyclowiz are brutally simple devices you know, if it is just for an update and you do not like soldering bridge it with something.

I've been reading about the flatmii for days now, and perhaps I've missed something, but...

Does it matter which version of wii firmware one is using? I know that some products only work with 3.2 - 3.4, but what about 4.0? Does firmware (any version currently available) have anything to do with whether or not, or how, this product works?

Thanks for your time, all!

i dont think this is new, ive seen these before and gba temp has a review for it too

That's why one should check the thread size and release date before commenting. Other people shouldn't bump old threads either, but that's their problem. =P

Anyway, this thing got owned by the USB Loader. >_>

@cup9192 it is a drive replacement so it will work with any wii.
However they flatmii team did release some code for the wii which will naturally require a homebrew capable wii, you can still use the older methods though.
