A Finnish man has complained about the removal of otheros functionality of PS3 consoles to the Finish for Consumer Affairs. It takes the view that the man 100 euros as compensation should receive.
The Finnish husband bought a PlayStation 3 on the day that Sony released firmware update 3.21, which the Japanese manufacturer otheros functionality removed. The packaging of the console was the possibility of an alternative operating system recommended. The man was forced to install the update because the new firmware required a game, and so became the otheros functionality lost.
Following a complaint from the man who demanded 150 Euros compensation, the Finnish Consumer Complaints Board Affairs investigated the matter. The committee concluded that consumers should be compensated for the fact that the update removes functionality at the time of purchase was available. The committee proposes a compensation of 100 euro, shared by the retailer and Sony. The arbitration committee has no authority to consider it to Sony to impose, but the opinion of the committee are taken into account in court.
After the world complained about the decision by Sony to remove the otheros capability, let the company did not intend to make money to give back to customers. In the United States has led to the removal of otheros a class action lawsuit against Sony. Although there are a number of complaints were rejected by the court, the case does go ahead.
Sony removed the feature after otheros hacker George GeoHot 'Hotz a memory dump of the hypervisor knew it. During the ensuing cat and mouse game between hackers and manufacturers otheros functionality was restored in new updates and also the root key that leaked Sony PS3 software used to sign. Hotz Sony sued for publishing the key, and accommodated the lawsuit in early April. The Japanese electronics giant is also behind a German PS3 hacker.
