Final Fantasy XVI gets a new gameplay trailer, releases Summer 2023

Debuted at today's State of Play was Square Enix's new trailer for the latest entry into the Final Fantasy series. This is the first major update on how Final Fantasy XVI is progressing, and with it, we get a glimpse at the story, in addition to the gameplay. The action RPG elements make a return from recent games, and there's battles against summons and huge bosses. Right now, the game is confirmed for PlayStation 5, and PC at some point after launch, with a release window of Summer 2023. Leading development on Final Fantasy XVI is Square Enix's Creative Business Unit III, headed by Naoki Yoshida, alongside the team behind the Dragon Quest Builders and Final Fantasy MMOs. Additionally, the "combat lead" from Devil May Cry V is on board.

Looks interesting. I'm more excited about Remake part 2. Probably going to have to wait longer than summer of 2023 for that one.

It's hard for me to get hyped for a mainline Final Fantasy after 13 and 15. Last good mainline Final Fantasy was 12 imo.

The 7 remake was great. Maybe they can return to their glory.
Speaking of, they need to wrap that game up. They really like to drag their feet over there at Squeenix. Remember all those FF13 Delays? I'm shocked it still debuted on the PS3, to be honest. Kingdom Hearts 3 was delayed so long, it skipped the PS3 era entirely. Someone over there needs to light a fire under the Dev's asses.

Here's hoping XVI is ok.
I didn't mind XIII/XV too much, I think they're even better than whatever the hell XII (baseline) was.
XII (IZJS) is kinda ok-ish though, but not good.

The last single player FF I really liked was FFX.

and that last article that said the game was almost finally complete we now know is a lie. summer 2023 is a year a way if it was almost finally complete it would come out this winter not next summer.

ive played every FF and will definitely play this one but I think the series is in trouble as these developers try to follow the gimmick/gatcha game strategy and change the base structure of ff which was one of the original type of games that had grinding built into it to the next level. getting knights of the round summon took hours and was fun back in the day. it couldnt just be bought via some microtransaction.

fast forward to 2023 and the direction the ff series has taken. square/enix is hoping to make some major coin off a "mainline" game. the longer this gets delayed from release the more the developers are going to want to recoup. expect alot of cashgrab options built in to cut down on a boring grind is my prediction.

War, violence and gore? What's next, the protagonist swearing every bloody minute? What is this shit? It's not the Final Fantasy I grew up with!

I feel the screen is too busy. They are going for hack and slash. I think numbers at this point don't mean shit. Show us a life bar and that's it. It is overloading my senses. Also the story has no charm.

Final Fantasy XV may have been mediocre but the journey had a great feeling to it. Friends travelling together, comrades. Final Fantasy 13 was a story about family, badly executed, but it had a feeling behind. They capitalised on that for the sequel that I enjoyed to a certain point Lightning Returns had some great moments. This feels empty. My opinion not imposing anything.
