Squaresoft and Enix were the two studios that merged into Square Enix. They also happen to be the original creators of FFIV, and the ones making this port. Why the hell can't they add new characters?

Because then it isn't FF IV. It isn't a collection if you are adding things that never previously existed. Then it is just FF IV, packaged with some other shit that isn't FF IV, then The After Years which came as an afterthought to milk what was a fairly popular game in the FF series.
This is yet another example of SE leeching a game for all its worth plus far more just so they can be satisfied. I've never understood porting a game to every system you can. I beat it on the Playstation after missing the chance to play the original SNES version. I beat it on the GBA. I beat the SNES version on an emulator after that. Why, oh why would I want to play the game yet again? For added content I don't even care about? No.
Square Enix is once again, ruining what was a respectable game.
By the way, Enix made FF IV, Square had nothing to do with it. They started ruining FF later.
