WiiXplorer works well

WiiXplorer.

It's also much more than that, being able to connect to SMB and FTP servers, as well as being an FTP server!

You can also ZIP up files, watch THP movies, and loads of other cool things!

wiixplorer is superb but it just doesn't work 100% with me. It doesn't recognize my usb, file sharing through ftp is SLOW and the latest update did mess my wii, I dont remember how I reverted back to the previous version.

Try installing cIOS202[60]v5.1 rodries mod, then switching your boot option to 202. IOS58 sucks, but Team Twiizers decide to force just about every app on WiiBrew to only use it.

I don't use IOS58, I hate it. So then I suppose Im already using cios202? What does that mod do?
Is it only for the USB support? Now that I mention, recent versions of mplayer ce doesn't recognise my USB either, last one was r.619 but I don't know how much of that depends on hermes 202 or libogc

by the way I have priiloader on cIOS60, installing that could screw my wii

besides v.5.1 removed usb support. read here:
- Removed support for a USB port (does not work well and not where the problem XD)

I will give it a go tonight, from what I read, it sounds perfect for what I wanted.

Basically, when I have a movie file, I want to transfer from my laptop to SD card, then SD to USB.

This would be so much simpler than fiddling around with unplugging the USB drive from the wii and the wall, connecting to the laptop and transferring files, then back again.
I haven't got the space to have my laptop closer to the HDD and Wii.

No, I'm talking about rodries mod of 5.1. It doesn't remove USB support, it improves speed. Also, [60] means it uses IOS60 as a base. It doesn't install into slot 60.

Use ModMii to download and install the version of 202 that I recommended, and go into boot settings to make sure you are using 202.

But then I could not use its ftp module. I dont' want to switch bugs, but fix them while keeping everything nice as before.

It works great, but you won't be able to use FTP anymore (SMB should work though). I suggest you use FTPii.

You aren't going to get everything in WiiXlporer. Just start using SMB or download FTPii. It will be more beneficial for you to install the version of 202 I suggested.
