These units of measurements give me a headache ,what does meafures mean?

Measures. Prior to about 1800 in print (this being from 1800), bit later in some more rural presses and for hand written stuff (and possibly to this day in the case of things chiselled into stone), the first s in a word (give or take -- there are a few odd quirks because English) used a so called long s. To modern eyes it looks like a bit like an f without the cross bar but is an s and should be read accordingly.
